Free tools for your next audio edit
Free online tone generator. Create a frequency reference.
Generate a sine-wave test tone at a frequency you choose. Set 1–30 seconds and a digital peak level, then preview and download a real 48 kHz, 16-bit mono WAV. The file is created in your browser without an account, microphone, audio upload or AI credits.

How to generate and download a test tone
- 01 / SET
Choose frequency and length
Use whole numbers from 20 to 20,000 Hz and 1 to 30 seconds. For a simple pitch reference, start with 440 Hz. A 1,000 Hz tone is another useful reference frequency.
- 02 / GENERATE
Create a PCM WAV
Choose a peak level from −36 to −6 dBFS. Generate creates a file without playing it. The default −18 dBFS leaves digital headroom; it does not set a calibrated speaker volume.
- 03 / SAVE
Preview manually and download
Set device volume low before pressing Play. Download the same WAV to use in an editor. Changing a setting clears the previous result; save before leaving.
Frequency and digital amplitude
What a sine-wave tone contains
A sine wave follows one repeating cycle. Frequency in hertz counts cycles per second: a 440 Hz tone completes 440 cycles each second. This generator writes samples at 48,000 frames per second, with one mono channel.
The sample formula is amplitude × sin(2π × frequency × frame ÷ 48,000). Amplitude is 10 raised to peak dBFS ÷ 20. For example, −6 dBFS is approximately 0.501 full scale, and −18 dBFS is approximately 0.126. The final integer samples are rounded to PCM16; an arbitrary frequency may not place a sampled peak exactly at the mathematical amplitude.
Five-millisecond linear ramps bring the first and last sample to zero, reducing abrupt boundaries. There is no added silence, normalization, limiter, sweep or noise. A ten-second file contains 480,000 frames and 960,044 bytes including its basic WAV header. Use the WAV inspector to check your saved copy.
Choose the right reference
Use a tone without mistaking it for a measurement
A saved tone can help you confirm that an editor imports WAV, inspect a digital level, or compare a known frequency before and after an effect. It does not measure the frequency response of your speakers, microphone, or room. Device processing can change what comes out of the speakers.
Mono playback does not establish independent left/right routing. For that task, use the original stereo files in the audio test-file library and review the channel comparison guide.
The waveform viewer shows amplitude ranges over time, not a frequency spectrum. Its full-file overview can show a steady envelope without resolving each sine cycle. For a digital level check, open the saved WAV in the loudness meter; a sustained tone is not representative of speech or music.
Not all devices reproduce every offered frequency. Start with low device volume and avoid increasing it to make a barely audible frequency stand out. This is not a calibrated hearing test or a sound-pressure meter.
A few useful answers
Free tone generator questions
How do I generate a test tone online?
Enter a whole frequency from 20 to 20,000 Hz, a duration from 1 to 30 seconds, and a peak level from −36 to −6 dBFS. Generate the WAV, then press Play manually or download it. The default is 440 Hz for 10 seconds at −18 dBFS.
Can I download the tone as WAV?
Yes. The generated file is mono, 48 kHz, 16-bit PCM WAV with 5 ms linear ramps at both ends. Preview and download use the same file. It contains no MP3 encoding, tags, artwork, or recording.
Does dBFS tell me how loud my speakers will be?
No. dBFS describes the digital sample level. Device volume, amplification, speaker response, and the listening environment affect acoustic loudness. Start with low device volume; this is not a calibrated sound-pressure or hearing test.
Why can I not hear a very low or high tone?
Speakers, headphones, playback settings, hearing, and the listening environment affect audibility. Do not raise the volume to force an inaudible frequency to become audible. This generator does not measure your equipment or diagnose hearing.
Can I create noise, a frequency sweep, or a stereo channel test?
This tool makes one constant-frequency mono sine tone. It does not create noise or sweeps, and a mono file cannot check independent left/right routing. Use the audio test-file library for existing stereo reference files.
Is tone generation free?
Generating, previewing, and downloading a tone need no account or credits. This local tool does not start an AI separation job. Save your download before leaving; no cloud tone library is created.
