In this guide
Unlink timeline audio and video for independent edits; extract audio from a Project-panel source when you need a new audio source clip; export a sequence when you need a standalone mix. These operations do not automatically separate dialogue, music and effects within a mixed soundtrack.
To separate audio from video in Premiere Pro, select the linked clip in the timeline and choose Clip → Unlink to edit its picture and sound independently. If you need a new audio source clip in the project, select the source in the Project panel and use Clip → Audio Options → Extract Audio. To create a standalone delivery file, use an audio-only export and check the saved result.
These are different operations. Unlinking does not export a file, and extracting a mixed soundtrack does not automatically separate its voice from music or sound effects.
Choose the right operation
| Goal | Premiere workflow | Result to check |
|---|---|---|
| Move or trim the audio independently in a sequence | Unlink the timeline clip, or temporarily select one component. | Sync after moving or trimming. |
| Create an audio source clip from a project clip | Project panel → Clip → Audio Options → Extract Audio. | Which source and channel mapping were used. |
| Save the sequence sound as a file | Export Media with a supported audio-only format. | Work area, included tracks, format and the actual exported file. |
| Remove a voice from a mixed soundtrack | Use original separate tracks if available, or compare source isolation. | Voice remnants and wanted music or effects. |
Unlink audio and video in the timeline
- Keep a project copy. Select the linked clip in the sequence. Before changing it, note its current position and play a phrase where lip sync is clear.
- Choose Clip → Unlink. Adobe's linking instructions describe unlinking clips for independent editing. Check which component is selected before deleting or moving anything.
- Edit the desired component. Move, trim or mute the audio as needed. Preserve its original location when you want it to remain synchronized with the picture.
- Play the result in context. Check both ends and every edited boundary. If you deliberately move the sound, listen for accidental offset or a doubled track.
For a temporary audio-only or video-only selection, Adobe's selection guide describes holding Alt on Windows or Option on macOS when selecting one component. That is a selection shortcut, not an audio export.
Extract a new audio source clip
To create audio from a source clip rather than unlinking a timeline edit, select one or more audio-containing clips in the Project panel, then choose Clip → Audio Options → Extract Audio. Adobe says the new audio files have “Audio Extracted” in their names and that source channel mapping, gain, speed, duration and interpret-footage adjustments carry over. See Adobe's Extract Audio guide for the documented behavior.
Audition the created source and check its duration and channels. Do not assume it represents only one voice or instrument: it contains the audio Premiere extracted from the selected source. If both the original and extracted audio are placed on active tracks, mute one while comparing.
Export an audio-only file
- Select the sequence or source you intend to export. Check the range and which audio tracks are enabled or muted.
- Choose File → Export → Media. Adobe's export guide describes choosing the format and reviewing audio settings.
- Choose an audio-only format offered by your version, such as WAV when available. Confirm the filename, destination, channel layout and sample rate; controls and available formats can vary.
- Export and open the saved file in a separate player or editor. Listen through the beginning, end and any transitions. A sequence export includes the active mix, not necessarily one original source.
For a short compatible MP4 or MOV, the free video-to-WAV converter offers a separate local browser workflow. Input and output must fit 50 MiB, and the video must be no longer than five minutes. Codec support varies; it does not select multiple audio streams or copy the encoded stream unchanged.
Separate one sound within the soundtrack
If the soundtrack contains speech over music, unlinking or exporting retains both. Check for original dialogue and music tracks first. If only the finished mix exists, test a short excerpt in the voice isolator: describe “spoken voice” and review Isolated sound. To reduce a distinct unwanted source while retaining more of the scene, target that sound and review Background audio instead.
Separation can change words or leave background sound. Compare the same difficult overlap with the original before downloading. The AI uploader accepts MP3, WAV, MP4 and MOV up to 50 MiB (52.43 MB); the download dialog shows the cost and AI downloads require an account and sufficient credits. Place the chosen audio at its original timeline position and follow the sync checklist.
Common questions
Does unlinking audio delete it from the video file?
No. It changes how the components are linked in the project timeline; keep the original source file unchanged and confirm the edit before exporting.
Why is the sound doubled after extracting?
Check whether both the original soundtrack and a newly added audio clip are playing. Solo or mute tracks to identify the duplicate, then audition the final export.
Can I separate audio in Premiere on a phone?
Adobe documents an Extract audio workflow in Premiere mobile that creates a timeline track. Its controls and export options differ from desktop.
