Free tools for your next audio edit
Extract audio from video. Save the soundtrack as MP3 or WAV.
Extract sound from a video by converting the audio in a short MP4 or MOV into a 16-bit WAV or re-encoded MP3. Preview and download the decoded soundtrack in your browser, with no account or video upload. Speech, music and effects already mixed together remain together.
Convert MP4 or MOV to audio
Free · localChoose a supported MP4 or MOV and prepare an audio file. No audio upload or account required.
Video containers can hold multiple streams and codecs; browser decoding determines which audio is read and this tool does not select a track. If conversion fails, use the desktop extraction guide. Audio and video may have offsets; check sync before editing. This tool does not separate voices or music, copy tags/artwork, preserve higher bit depth or source codec padding, remove noise, or isolate sound. Input and output must each fit 50 MiB and five minutes; an oversized output is rejected rather than cut.

How to extract audio from a video
- 01 / OPEN
Choose a short MP4 or MOV
Select a video with an audio track, up to 50 MiB and five minutes. Decoding happens locally. Support depends on the browser and the file's codecs.
- 02 / CONVERT
Choose WAV or MP3
Choose 16-bit WAV at 44.1 or 48 kHz, or a 48 kHz MP3 at your preferred bitrate. The output must also fit 50 MiB.
- 03 / CHECK
Preview and download
Listen to the actual audio file and check its duration and sound. Keep the original video and verify sync if the audio returns to a timeline.
Know what you are extracting
A soundtrack can contain many sounds
Extracting the soundtrack keeps speech, music and effects that were already mixed in it. It does not create independent stems. If you need one sound, compare the sound effect extractor or voice isolator after saving a supported audio file. Those separate AI workflows require an account and credits for downloads.
A video can contain more than one audio stream. This browser converter does not let you choose between them. For stream selection, copying encoded audio without re-encoding, longer files or unsupported codecs, use the video audio extraction guide.
The browser decodes the soundtrack and exports 16-bit WAV or re-encodes it as MP3. MP3 is lossy and can add delay or padding. The output is not a byte-for-byte copy, source metadata is not preserved, and resampling or codec delay may affect alignment. Check the beginning and end in your editor; see how to replace audio in video.

Built with the LAME encoder via lamejs.
The optional MP3 download uses lamejs 1.2.1 by Alex Zhukov, a JavaScript port of the LAME MP3 encoder. Its unmodified script is served separately. See the attribution and source notes, upstream license notice, LGPL-3.0 and GPL-3.0 texts, and complete upstream source package.
A few useful answers
Free video to audio converter questions
How do I extract audio from an MP4 or MOV?
Choose a supported MP4 or MOV up to 50 MiB and five minutes, choose WAV or MP3, and prepare the audio. WAV supports 44.1 or 48 kHz; MP3 uses 48 kHz. Preview and download the actual output. The decoded audio must be mono or stereo, and the output must also fit 50 MiB. Browser codec support varies.
Can I extract a single sound effect from a video?
This converter saves the decoded soundtrack as a mix. To test an individual sound effect within that mix, use the separate sound effect extractor and compare its result with the original. Isolation can leave other sounds or change the effect, and its downloads require an account and credits.
Does this remove speech or music from the video?
No. The output contains the audio decoded from the video, including sounds already mixed together. Source separation is a different task; Saturalabs offers separate AI isolation workflows with account and credit requirements.
Does the video leave my device?
The converter reads the chosen file locally in your browser and does not upload it. Save the output before leaving; files are not stored for a later session.
Can I choose a different audio track?
No. The browser determines which audio stream it decodes. If your video contains multiple audio streams and you need a specific one, use an editor or the stream-selection method in the extraction guide.
Does the output preserve the original audio exactly?
No. The browser decodes and resamples audio to the selected rate, then the tool writes 16-bit PCM or re-encodes a lossy MP3. It does not copy the encoded stream or metadata. Codec delay, padding, offsets and browser behavior can affect timing; check the result against the video.
Why did my video fail to convert?
A video can have no audio or contain a codec unsupported by your browser. Files must fit the size and duration limits, and decoded audio must be mono or stereo. Try a different browser or export the audio in a desktop video editor.
