How to Remove Background Noise in Premiere Pro

Reduce background noise in Premiere Pro with Essential Sound and Enhance Speech. Compare dialogue quality, handle music or effects, and check the final video.

In this guide
The short version

Select a dialogue clip and test Essential Sound's Reduce Noise or Enhance Speech on a representative passage. Compare at a similar volume, especially where noise overlaps quiet words. If you need music or effects to remain, review them too: a speech-focused treatment can change the rest of the scene.

To reduce background noise in Premiere Pro, select a dialogue clip, open the Essential Sound panel, and test Repair → Reduce Noise. You can also compare Adobe's Enhance Speech on a dialogue clip. Start with a short passage where the noise overlaps the speaker, and listen for damaged words as well as the reduction in noise.

Keep a copy of the project or source clip. A quieter background is not automatically a better result if consonants, breaths or the room sound become unnatural.

Reduce background noise with Essential Sound

  1. Select the dialogue clip. In your timeline, select the audio containing the speaker. Open Essential Sound and assign the clip the Dialogue type. Adobe's Essential Sound guide explains how the controls depend on the assigned type.
  2. Open Repair. Enable Reduce Noise and adjust its slider. Adobe's dialogue repair instructions describe the control and emphasize that the amount depends on the noise and acceptable effect on the wanted signal.
  3. Increase gradually. Loop a passage containing both noise and quiet words. Compare the treated and original clip at a similar listening level. Stop or reduce the setting if speech starts to sound watery, thin or indistinct.
  4. Review the full edit. Listen through changes in background noise, edit boundaries and the final export. Keep room tone consistent enough that a processed section does not sound abruptly disconnected from the surrounding scene.

Adobe also lists Reduce Rumble, DeHum, DeEss and Reduce Reverb in the Repair section. These address different problems; enabling every control does not guarantee a better recording. The hum guide helps distinguish a narrow electrical tone from other noise.

Compare Enhance Speech

Select a dialogue clip and choose Enhance in Essential Sound. Adobe says analysis runs in the background; after it completes, the Mix Amount control balances enhanced and original audio. See Adobe's Enhance Speech instructions for the documented workflow.

Compare a few settings on the same passage. Listen to the original, a gentle blend and a stronger candidate at similar levels. Review proper names, quiet word endings and overlapping noise without looking at a transcript. If the processed voice changes character or loses information, try a lower mix amount or keep the original.

What if music or another sound overlaps the voice?

If the music was added as a separate timeline clip, reduce or mute that clip first. If it is already mixed with the speaker, processing the dialogue clip affects the entire recording. Speech enhancement may reduce ambience or effects you intended to keep.

For an alternative comparison, open Saturalabs' video noise-removal workflow with a supported MP3, WAV, MP4 or MOV up to 50 MiB (52.43 MB). Describe “spoken voice,” select Isolate sound, and audition Isolated sound. If preserving the scene is more important than voice alone, try describing one distinct unwanted source and inspect Background audio instead. Overlap can leave noise or remove wanted detail; neither output is guaranteed.

Review the credit cost shown in the download dialog. AI downloads require an account and sufficient credits. Import a chosen audio file into Premiere at its original source position, mute the old mixed audio for the comparison, and check sync at the beginning and end. The video audio replacement guide covers full-length and excerpt alignment.

If you need to edit or export the complete soundtrack first, see how to separate audio from video in Premiere Pro.

Common questions

Why does the voice sound robotic after noise reduction?

Heavy processing can alter speech along with noise. Lower the reduction or Enhance Speech mix, compare the original at a similar level, and check the most difficult overlap. An alternate recording may be preferable if the words are obscured or clipped.

Does Reduce Noise remove music while keeping speech?

It is a noise-reduction control, not a guarantee of source-specific music removal. If music is separate, adjust its track. If it is mixed into the clip, compare a separation workflow and check the entire scene.

Will these steps fix wind hitting the microphone?

They may reduce some rumble, but a gust can overwhelm or distort the voice. See the wind-noise guide for recording and repair options.
