Live 12 Suite added Stem Separation in version 12.3. Select a clip, choose Separate Stems to New Audio Tracks, select the parts and processing mode, then compare the separated tracks with the source. Others is a combined remainder, not a separate track for each instrument.
Ableton Live's Stem Separation can estimate vocals, drums, bass and an Others part from a mixed audio clip. In Live 12 Suite version 12.3 or later, select the audio and choose Separate Stems to New Audio Tracks from its context menu or the Create menu. Choose the parts and processing mode, then listen to each result. This estimates parts from a finished mix; it does not recover the original multitrack session.
Which versions of Ableton Live have stem separation?
Ableton says the feature was introduced in Live 12.3 Suite and is not available in Standard, Intro or Lite. Check your installed version and edition if the command is missing. In Live 12.4, Arrangement View also supports separating a selected time range and merging selected parts to a single track. See Ableton's Stem Separation FAQ for current requirements and options.
How to separate stems from a song in Ableton Live
- Choose a source you may use. Import a mono or stereo song, loop or sample into the Session or Arrangement View. Keep the original recording available for comparison, including a quiet verse and a dense chorus.
- Open the separation command. Select the clip and choose Separate Stems to New Audio Tracks from the context menu or Create menu. Ableton also supports starting from an audio file in Live's browser.
- Select the parts. Enable the desired Vocals, Drums, Bass and Others toggles. Others groups material not identified as the first three categories; it is not an independent guitar or piano stem.
- Choose speed or quality. High Speed is useful for a quick audition. High Quality uses additional processing and takes longer. In High Quality, selecting Others still requires processing the other parts, so it may take longer than selecting just one needed source.
- Separate and audition. Click Separate. Live creates the selected stem clips on new tracks; it deactivates the source clip when separating from a clip to avoid doubled output. Solo each part, then compare the combined result with the original at a similar level.
For the exact behavior in your installed version, consult Ableton's Live stem separation manual. Processing time depends on the computer, mode and source. Live uses local processing; the FAQ notes GPU acceleration on Apple silicon and CPU processing on Intel Macs and Windows.
Make an instrumental or isolate drums
For a vocal-reduced backing, select Drums, Bass and Others and audition them together, without Vocals. In Live 12.4, you can use Merge to Single Track for two or three selected parts if one combined clip is useful. Check the chorus and vocal reverb tails: singing may remain in the backing and instruments may lose detail.
For drum practice or sampling, select Drums and listen to the isolated result; to make a drum-reduced backing, compare the remaining selected parts. Listen to cymbal tails and transients as well as the kick and snare. The drum-removal guide has a checklist for rehearsal cues.
How is stem separation different from exporting stems?
Separation estimates parts from an already mixed recording. Exporting tracks from your own Live Set renders material you already have on separate tracks or groups. If the original project is available, use its individual tracks first rather than assuming an AI estimate will match them.
For an export handoff, agree on the same start and end, file format, sample rate, processing and effect tails. Ableton's stem export instructions describe rendering individual tracks and handling returns and master effects. Reimport the files into a fresh Set and compare with the original; see the stem delivery checklist.
What if the result sounds incomplete?
Listen for vocal fragments in Others, high-hat bleed outside the drum track, missing note attacks and unnatural tails. These are estimates and sounds can end up in the wrong part. Try a short difficult passage in both quality modes and compare at similar playback levels; a different mode may change artifacts but cannot guarantee a clean result. Keep an original file and any authorized multitracks.
If you need a specific sound within the broad Others group, Saturalabs' named-source workflow lets you describe one audible source and compare Isolated sound with the remaining Background audio. It processes one requested source per pass, rather than automatically returning Ableton's four categories. It accepts supported files up to 50 MiB; WAV downloads require an account and sufficient credits. Neither approach guarantees a perfectly clean source.
Common questions
Does Ableton Live Standard include Stem Separation?
Ableton documents the feature for Live 12 Suite from version 12.3, not Standard, Intro or Lite. Check the current official requirements for your installed edition.
Can I split only the chorus?
In Live 12.4 Arrangement View, make a time selection within a clip and choose Separate Stems for Time Selection. Live creates stems for the chosen portion. Check the clip boundaries and timing before editing.
Does Others give me a separate guitar and piano?
No. Others combines audio not identified as vocals, drums or bass. Individual instruments and separation artifacts may still be present together.
