Convert WAV to MP3
Free · localChoose WAV or a compatible M4A to create an MP3 delivery copy, or MP3 for a new encode. Preview and compare the actual file size before downloading.
A comparison only: this does not automatically choose a bitrate or guarantee acceptance by another service. Check that destination's actual rules.
Your audio stays in this browser. No trimming, fades, normalization, mono downmix, or noise removal is applied. Keep your original; this tool does not promise a smaller file at every bitrate.

How to convert WAV to MP3
- 01 / OPEN
Choose a compatible WAV
Select a mono or stereo file up to 50 MiB and five minutes. Your browser reads it locally. WAV is a container; codec support varies by browser.
- 02 / ENCODE
Pick an MP3 bitrate
Choose 64, 96, 128, 192 or 320 kbps, then prepare the MP3. The browser decodes at 48 kHz; the encoder may use a lower rate at lower bitrates. The output must also fit 50 MiB.
- 03 / LISTEN
Preview and download
Compare the actual sizes and listen to the exported MP3. The size limit is for comparison; it does not choose a bitrate automatically. Keep your original WAV.

How much smaller will the MP3 be?
At 192 kbps, one minute of MP3 audio has roughly 1,440,000 bytes of encoded payload. One minute of uncompressed 48 kHz, 16-bit stereo PCM contains about 11,520,000 sample bytes. Actual sizes differ with headers, framing and padding, and WAV files can use other encodings. The converter reports the actual sizes so you can check your file.
MP3 encoding discards information. Choose a bitrate by listening to a representative passage, especially quiet sounds and transients, at a similar volume to the original. A higher bitrate may retain more detail, but cannot restore missing information. The output does not copy tags or artwork; encoder delay or padding can affect precise timing.
Try this synthetic 44.1 kHz WAV if you want a test file. For longer recordings or a file your browser cannot decode, see the WAV to MP3 guide for desktop methods. Use the WAV inspector to check a source file or the file size calculator to plan a bitrate.

Built with the LAME encoder via lamejs.
The MP3 download uses lamejs 1.2.1 by Alex Zhukov, a JavaScript port of the LAME MP3 encoder. Its unmodified script is served separately. See the attribution and source notes, upstream license notice, LGPL-3.0 and GPL-3.0 texts, and complete upstream source package.
A few useful answers
Free WAV to MP3 converter questions
How do I convert WAV to MP3?
Choose a supported mono or stereo WAV up to 50 MiB and five minutes, select an MP3 bitrate, then prepare, preview and download the export. The output must also fit 50 MiB.
Does the converter upload my WAV?
No. Your browser reads and decodes the file locally and a local worker encodes the MP3. Save the result before leaving; the tool does not keep a cloud copy.
Does converting WAV to MP3 lose quality?
MP3 is a lossy format. A higher bitrate may retain more detail but cannot restore detail absent from the source. Keep the original WAV for future editing and compare the export at a similar listening level.
Why will my WAV not open?
WAV is a container and browser support depends on the audio encoding inside it. The file must also be nonempty, mono or stereo, and within the input and duration limits. Try a standard PCM WAV or a desktop method in the guide.
Will the MP3 always be smaller?
No. A WAV can contain compressed audio, and bitrate, duration and encoder framing affect the result. Compare the actual sizes; the selected comparison limit does not automatically choose a bitrate.
Can I use this file for a timed video edit?
MP3 encoding can add delay or padding, and browser decoding may resample. Keep the WAV for timing-sensitive work and check the beginning and end of the MP3 against your video.
