In this guide
Decode a compatible M4A and encode a new MP3, then listen to the actual file. M4A is a container, browser codec support varies, and AAC-to-MP3 adds another lossy step. Keep the original.
To convert M4A to MP3, open a compatible M4A in an audio converter, select an MP3 bitrate and export a new file. Saturalabs' free local converter can prepare a short compatible recording directly in the browser. On a Mac, Apple Music can also create an MP3 version of a supported library file. Play the resulting file and keep the original.
M4A describes a container, not one audio codec. It often contains AAC or Apple Lossless. Changing the filename to .mp3 does not convert the sound; the original must be decoded and encoded as MP3.
Convert M4A to MP3 in your browser
- Open the source file. Visit the audio compressor and M4A-to-MP3 converter and choose a compatible mono or stereo M4A. Input is limited to 50 MiB and five minutes.
- Choose a bitrate. Select 64, 96, 128, 192 or 320 kbps. A higher setting generally produces a larger file; it cannot restore detail already lost in an AAC source.
- Prepare the output. The browser decodes the source at 48 kHz and creates a new MP3 locally; the encoder may use a lower output sample rate at lower bitrates. There is no need to download and reopen a WAV first. Codec support varies by browser and M4A variant.
- Preview and download. Listen to the actual output, check its beginning and end, and compare its size with the original before saving. No account or audio upload is required for this utility; original tags and artwork are not copied.
An MP3 is not guaranteed to be smaller than its M4A source, especially if the source uses a lower bitrate. Input and output must both fit the tool's limits. If the file cannot be decoded, try a compatible desktop converter or a different source; a changed extension does not make an unsupported codec compatible.
Convert M4A to MP3 in Apple Music on Mac
- Open Music and choose Music → Settings → Files → Import Settings.
- Choose MP3 Encoder from Import Using and confirm the settings.
- Select a supported song in your library, then choose File → Convert → Create MP3 Version.
- Play the new version and keep the original. The converted copy appears in the library alongside it.
Apple's M4A-to-MP3 instructions describe this workflow and a GarageBand alternative. Availability depends on the file; protected purchases or subscription tracks may not be convertible. This guide does not provide a method to bypass those restrictions.
Convert using Audacity
Import the M4A, listen to it, then use File → Export Audio and choose MP3. Audacity may require its optional FFmpeg library to import M4A; see its FFmpeg installation guidance. A saved Audacity project is not the same as an exported MP3. Open the export and check the duration and playback before sharing it.
Choose MP3 or WAV for the next step
| Need | Useful choice | Tradeoff |
|---|---|---|
| A broadly compatible listening file | MP3 | Lossy encoding; size and quality depend on bitrate and source. |
| A PCM working file for editing | WAV | Typically larger; conversion cannot recover discarded source detail. |
| The best available original | Keep the original M4A or source project. | The M4A codec and bit depth vary; inspect the actual file. |
If the next editor or uploader requires WAV, use the M4A-to-WAV converter or the desktop WAV guide. Conversion changes format; it does not remove background noise or isolate a voice. MP3 encoding may add delay or padding, so check alignment if the audio returns to a video timeline.
Common questions
Will converting an M4A to MP3 improve its sound?
No. If the M4A contains lossy AAC, a new MP3 encode can discard more information. Start with the highest-quality authorized original available, and compare the output at a similar volume.
Why won't the M4A open?
The file may be empty, protected, outside the tool's size or duration limits, or contain a codec your browser does not decode. A different browser or compatible desktop editor may support it; not every file with the same extension contains the same audio format.
Can the converter process a whole album?
The local tool processes one supported short file at a time. For longer recordings or batch work, use an appropriate desktop workflow and verify the resulting files.
