How to Extract Audio from Video with VLC

Use VLC's Convert/Save workflow to export audio from a video, choose an audio-only profile, and troubleshoot silent or incomplete exports.

In this guide
The short version

In VLC desktop, open Convert/Save, add the video, choose an audio-only profile and a new destination, then start conversion. Play the saved file and check its duration. Extraction retains the soundtrack's existing mix.

To extract audio from a video in VLC on Windows, open Media → Convert/Save, add the video file and choose Convert/Save. Select an audio-only profile such as Audio - MP3, choose a new destination filename, and start the conversion. When it finishes, open the saved audio and check the beginning, end and duration. Menu names and available profiles can differ across VLC versions and operating systems.

VLC exports the selected soundtrack as a file; it does not automatically separate speech, music and effects already mixed together. Keep the original video and choose a destination that does not overwrite it.

Extract an MP3 in VLC desktop

  1. Open the conversion dialog. On Windows, choose Media → Convert/Save. VideoLAN's VLC 3 desktop documentation describes the conversion workflow.
  2. Add the source. In the File tab, choose Add, select your video, and continue with Convert/Save. Play the source first to confirm it contains the sound you need.
  3. Choose an audio-only profile. Select an available Audio - MP3 profile. Check the profile settings if you need a particular bitrate; profile names and defaults depend on the installed version.
  4. Choose a new destination. Use Browse to pick a folder and a distinct filename ending in .mp3. The filename should match the selected profile: changing an extension alone does not convert a file.
  5. Start and verify. Start conversion and wait for it to finish. Open the saved file in a player, listen at the beginning and end, and compare its duration with the source.

On macOS, look for the equivalent Convert/Stream option in VLC's File menu; the layout and labels differ from the Windows dialog. If the desired profile is not available, inspect the installed version's profile options or use a compatible audio editor. Re-encoding to MP3 is lossy and can add delay or padding.

MP3, WAV or a copy of the original audio?

OutputUseful forTradeoff
MP3Convenient listening and smaller filesA new lossy encode; check playback and timing.
PCM WAVA working copy for editingLarger; it cannot restore detail lost in the source.
Encoded stream copyAvoiding another encode when the codec and container are compatibleRequires an appropriate stream-copy workflow and container.

For stream selection or an FFmpeg copy example, see the complete audio extraction guide. Copying and transcoding are different operations; inspect the actual output rather than relying on the extension.

Use a browser for a short MP4 or MOV

The free video-to-audio converter reads a supported MP4 or MOV locally and produces a 16-bit WAV or a re-encoded MP3. Choose a file up to 50 MiB and five minutes, select the format, then preview and download. The decoded audio must be mono or stereo and the output must also fit 50 MiB. Codec support varies by browser, and this converter cannot select among multiple audio streams.

Troubleshoot the saved audio

  • No sound: play the original and confirm it contains audio; try a supported source and check the profile uses an audio codec.
  • Unexpected video output: choose an audio-only profile and a new destination. The extension by itself does not choose the output codec.
  • Incomplete output: wait for the conversion to finish, check available disk space and compare the saved duration with the original.
  • Wrong soundtrack: the source may contain multiple audio streams. Check the stream-selection options in your installed VLC version or use a dedicated stream-selection workflow.

What if you need only the voice or music?

Conversion saves the soundtrack mix. If voice and music overlap, use separate source tracks when available. Otherwise, test the voice isolator or vocal remover on a short representative passage and compare the result with the original. Separation may leave bleed or change wanted details. These AI tools are separate from the free converter; downloads require an account and sufficient credits, with the cost shown in the download dialog.
