How to Add Music to a Facebook Post, Photo or Story

Add an available song to a Facebook post or Story, or prepare a video with your own music before sharing. Check playback, availability and rights.

In this guide
The short version

Start the post or Story in Facebook and use the available music control to select a song and excerpt. For a local recording, add it to a video in an editor first, then upload and preview the exported video.

To add music to a Facebook post, start creating the post in the Facebook app, add your photo or video, then look for the music control in the composer. If it is offered, choose an available song and the excerpt you want, preview the result and check the audience before sharing. Controls and song availability can differ by account, region and post type.

For a Story, use its separate creation flow and Music sticker. To use your own local recording, you can add it to a video in an editor before posting. A song selected in Facebook and a soundtrack embedded in a video are different workflows; both require attention to usage rights.

Add music to a Facebook Feed post

  1. Start the post. Open the Facebook app, begin a new Feed post and choose a photo or video if that is what you want to share.
  2. Look for Music. In the composer or available editing controls, select the music option if it appears. Browse or search the songs available to your account.
  3. Choose a section. Pick the song and use the available controls to select the excerpt. If the post contains speech, listen for whether the music masks it.
  4. Review and share. Preview the post, check its audience and any music notices, then publish. If the control is absent, check the post type and current app; do not assume every account has the same option.

Meta says it redesigned its Feed and Story composers to make tools such as adding music easier to find. The interface can change; this is a starting path rather than a guarantee that each control appears on every device.

Add music to a Facebook Story

  1. Open Story creation. Choose a photo or video from your device, or capture a new one.
  2. Choose the Music sticker. Open the sticker tray, select Music if offered and search or browse for a track.
  3. Select the excerpt and preview. Choose the part of the song, review the visual and listen to the Story. Adjust the sticker or other available settings, check your audience and share.

Meta's music announcement describes choosing a photo or video, selecting the Music sticker and picking a section of the song. The announcement is historical, so current labels and availability may differ.

Add your own music to a Facebook post

  1. Choose your source files. Use an audio recording and a photo or video you have permission to publish. Save the originals separately.
  2. Create a video. Import the visual and music into a video editor as separate timeline items. If you begin with a still image, set its duration so the exported video lasts long enough for the excerpt.
  3. Trim and balance. Position the music and lower it beneath speech. Listen from the beginning to the end, including quiet words and the final cut.
  4. Export and post. Play the saved video outside Facebook to confirm its soundtrack, then choose it when creating the post or Story. Preview it and review any platform notice.

The audio trimmer prepares supported mono or stereo MP3 and WAV files locally, up to five minutes and 50 MiB. Select an excerpt, choose the download format, prepare and download it, then import it into your video editor. The tool does not edit video or upload to Facebook. For a fuller timeline walkthrough, see how to add audio to video.

Embedding a soundtrack does not add it to Facebook's music library or guarantee it will remain available. Keep the editable project in case you need to change the mix or replace the track.

Why is the music option missing or silent?

ProblemWhat to check
No music controlCheck the composer for the intended post type, update the app and review the options available to your account. A track or feature can vary by region, account or use.
A song is unavailableTry an available, appropriately licensed alternative. A song available for listening elsewhere is not necessarily available in Facebook's music selection.
The video has no soundPlay the exported file outside Facebook and check device volume. If it is already silent, return to the project and inspect track mute and export settings.
Music is louder than speechAdjust the available mix controls or return to separate tracks in the editor. Test a quiet sentence on the device your audience is likely to use.
A post is muted after sharingRead any notice, check the music's permitted use and replace it if necessary. Exporting through another editor does not guarantee continued availability.

Check rights before sharing

Owning a recording, streaming a song or crediting its artist does not automatically grant permission to publish it in a video. Check rights for both the composition and recording, along with Meta's current terms for your account and intended use. Commercial content, advertising and personal sharing can have different requirements.

Common questions

Can I add music to a photo?

If Facebook offers the music control for your photo post or Story, choose an available track there. To pair a still image with your own audio file, make a video containing the image and soundtrack before uploading.

Can I add music after a post is published?

Editing options vary by post and account. Check the post's available editing controls; if music cannot be added there, prepare a revised post or video and review it before sharing.

Can I use the same process on Instagram?

Instagram has its own controls. See the Instagram Story music guide for its sticker and original-audio workflows.
