How to Cut Audio in Audacity and Export the Result

Learn how to select and delete a section, trim a clip, split audio and export an MP3 or WAV in Audacity, with practical checks for clicks and timing.

In this guide
The short version

Select the audio you want to remove and delete it, or trim a clip to keep a selected passage. Splitting creates editable clip boundaries. Export the result separately and check each cut for missing words or clicks.

To cut audio in Audacity, import the file, click and drag over the section you want to remove, then press Delete or Backspace. Play across the join and use File → Export Audio to save the result as an audio file. Keep the original: deleting a middle section changes the timing of what follows.

If you want to keep a passage rather than delete it, select that passage and use Edit → Remove Special → Trim Audio on the selected clip. For boundaries you want to rearrange separately, use Split Clip instead. Audacity's editing guide explains selections, deletion and clip handles; names and layout can vary by version.

Need several separate files instead of editable clip boundaries? See how to split an audio file into parts with labels and multiple export.

To soften an outer edge after cutting, follow the Audacity fade guide for selection, fade duration and crossfade checks.

Remove a section in Audacity

  1. Import and listen. Open or import an MP3 or WAV. Save the original separately and play the passage before making the edit.
  2. Select what should go. Drag across the waveform on the intended track. Zoom in for a more precise boundary, then play the selection and its surroundings to confirm you have not included wanted words or music.
  3. Delete the selection. Press Delete or Backspace. The selected audio is removed and later audio moves toward the cut. If other synchronized tracks matter, check their alignment after the edit.
  4. Review the join. Listen before and after the boundary. Undo and revise the selection if it clips a consonant, interrupts a breath or creates an unnatural transition.

Keep an excerpt or split a clip

To keep a continuous excerpt, select the wanted region within the clip and choose Edit → Remove Special → Trim Audio. Audacity's Trim Audio documentation notes that other separate clips on the track may remain; inspect the entire timeline rather than assuming the command cleared every track. Clip trimming can be reversed by dragging the hidden edges back in the project.

To create independent clip boundaries, click at a position and choose Split Clip, or select a region and split at its edges. Move a clip using its handle and check any gap or overlap. Splitting makes editable pieces; it does not by itself save separate files.

Export MP3 or WAV

Choose File → Export Audio, select the intended range and format, name the file and save it. Audacity distinguishes an editable project from an exported audio file in its export guidance. Open the exported file and check its duration, start, end and edits. MP3 applies a new lossy encode and may add delay or padding; WAV is useful for a later edit but cannot restore detail already lost in an MP3 source.

Cut a short excerpt without installing an editor

The free browser audio trimmer keeps one continuous excerpt from a supported mono or stereo MP3 or WAV up to 50 MiB and five minutes. Set the start and end, prepare and preview the actual WAV or re-encoded MP3, then download it. It reads the file locally and does not upload audio or require an account. For multiple cuts and separate tracks, use an editor such as Audacity.

Need to separate singing from the music?

Cutting keeps or removes a time range; it does not separate a singer from instruments playing at the same time. The Audacity vocal-removal guide compares the optional Music Separation plugin, its compatibility requirements and the older center-cancellation method. Start with a short representative passage and compare the result with the original before exporting.

Why is there a click at the cut?

An abrupt change at a boundary can produce a click. Try moving the edit to a more suitable point or applying a short fade where it does not remove a wanted attack. A join between two clips may call for a crossfade instead. Listen in context; no single setting works for every cut. The cut-click troubleshooting guide compares these options.
