How to Get a YouTube Transcript or Download Your Captions

View a YouTube video transcript, find a moment by its captions, or download a caption file from YouTube Studio for a video you manage.

In this guide
The short version

For a video with captions, open its description and choose Show transcript. To download a caption file for a video you manage, open the video's language track in YouTube Studio → Subtitles and use Options → Download subtitles.

To get a YouTube video's transcript, open the video description and select Show transcript. This displays the available caption text; select a line to jump to that moment. If you manage the video and need a caption file, use YouTube Studio → Subtitles, open the relevant language track and choose Options → Download subtitles.

These are different tasks: a viewer can read a transcript where captions are available; a channel owner or authorized editor uses Studio to manage that video's caption tracks. A transcript is not automatically accurate, and viewing text does not itself grant permission to republish it.

View a YouTube transcript

  1. Open the video. On the watch page, expand the description if necessary.
  2. Choose Show transcript. Look in the description for the transcript control. YouTube says transcripts are available for videos that have captions; the appearance of controls can vary by device and app version.
  3. Read or navigate. Select a line to jump to that point in the video. If a language selector is offered, choose the caption track you want and check that it matches the spoken language.
  4. Verify important text. Listen to the original around names, numbers and any uncertain phrases before quoting or relying on the transcript.

YouTube's transcript instructions describe Show transcript in the video description and selecting a line to navigate. They do not promise a download button for every viewer or video.

Download subtitles for a video you manage

  1. Open YouTube Studio. Sign in to the account that manages the video and select Subtitles from the left menu.
  2. Choose the video and language. Open the intended video, then select Edit under Subtitles for the language track you need.
  3. Download the file. Open Options → Download subtitles. Save the file where you can find it, and retain an unmodified copy.
  4. Open and review it. Check the text and timing in a suitable caption editor or plain-text editor. A timed caption file is not always a clean prose transcript; keep its timing and format intact if you plan to re-upload it.

These steps follow YouTube's caption editing and download instructions. If you cannot access the video's caption editor, ask its owner for an authorized copy instead of assuming the Studio download is available to every viewer.

Why is Show transcript missing?

  • No captions are available: YouTube's transcript view depends on captions. Check the video's available caption controls and whether the owner provides a separate transcript.
  • Captions are still processing: For your own recent upload, allow time and check the Subtitles section in Studio. YouTube says automatic captions are not necessarily ready immediately.
  • Speech was difficult to recognize: Overlap, poor sound quality, long silence or an unsupported language can affect automatic captions. Review YouTube's troubleshooting guidance and add or correct captions where you manage the video.
  • The interface differs: Expand the description and check the available controls on your device. A missing control is not evidence that a third-party site can reliably or lawfully supply the text.

Check accuracy and accessibility

Automatic speech recognition may misrepresent words, especially names, accents, numbers or speech under music. Listen to the original and correct the words and timing where you have editing access. YouTube's caption editor lets creators review and edit caption tracks; do not treat an unreviewed transcript as a verbatim record.

A transcript can be useful as a searchable document, but a transcript alone does not replace synchronized captions for video viewers. Some content also needs descriptions of important visual information. The video transcript guide explains these differences, and the subtitle guide covers timed captions.

What if the voice is hard to hear?

First use an authorized original or a separate voice track if one exists. For an overlapping sound in a local recording, the Saturalabs voice isolator can produce an estimated voice for comparison. Upload a supported MP3, WAV, MP4 or MOV up to 50 MiB, describe the spoken voice, and check Isolated sound against the original. AI downloads require an account and sufficient credits; the cost appears before download.

Isolation is an audio-processing step, not transcription: it may alter words or retain noise, and it cannot reliably recover speech that was not captured. Always verify against the original recording and obtain permission to use the source.

Common questions

Can I download the transcript of any YouTube video?

Not necessarily. YouTube documents viewing a transcript for videos with captions and downloading subtitle files in Studio for videos you manage. Ask the owner for permission and an appropriate copy when you do not control the video.

Is a transcript the same as an SRT file?

A transcript is text representing content; an SRT file is a caption format with timed entries. A caption file can be used as a starting point for a transcript, but formatting and timing may need separate treatment.

Can I quote or republish a transcript?

Access to a transcript does not automatically grant reuse rights. Check the owner's permissions and the rules applicable to your intended use.
