How to Record a FaceTime Call With Audio

Record an eligible FaceTime audio call on iPhone, find the recording in Notes, and understand the limits of screen recording a video call.

In this guide
The short version

For an eligible one-to-one FaceTime audio call on iPhone, ask the other person to agree, then use More → Call Recording. Both participants hear a notice and the recording is saved in Notes. Screen recording a video call does not guarantee that either side's audio will be captured.

To record an eligible one-to-one FaceTime audio call on iPhone, first make sure the other person agrees. During the call, tap More → Call Recording. Both participants hear a recording notice. When you stop or end the call, open Notes → Call Recordings and play the saved audio.

This is Apple's documented feature for supported audio calls. It does not establish that a FaceTime video call will be recorded with both voices. If you need video and audio together, arrange a supported recording method with everyone in advance and test the actual saved file.

Record a FaceTime audio call on iPhone

  1. Check availability and agreement. Apple's FaceTime audio-call guide says the feature is available in some countries and regions for a call with one other person. Check your device, language and region, and make sure the other person is willing to be recorded.
  2. Start a one-to-one audio call. Open FaceTime and connect with the person. This workflow concerns an audio call, not a promise of a recorded video meeting.
  3. Start recording. During the call, tap More, then Call Recording. Apple says both participants hear an audio notice when recording starts. Begin before the conversation you need to capture.
  4. Stop and review. Stop the recording or end the call. Open Notes, go to Call Recordings, open the note and play the audio. Check the beginning, end and both voices.

Apple's call-recording support page describes iPhone support starting with iOS 18. Availability and controls can change; a missing option may reflect software, region or call-type restrictions.

Can you screen record a FaceTime video call with audio?

An iPhone screen recording can capture a video of the screen, but it is not a reliable guarantee of FaceTime call audio. Apple says some apps may not allow audio or video recording. A microphone setting or visible recording indicator alone does not establish that the remote participant's voice was saved.

With everyone's agreement, make a short test using the exact devices and call type you plan to use. Stop the recording, open the saved video and listen for both voices and any audio needed before relying on the workflow. If a voice is absent, do not assume a later call will work; choose a service with a supported recording feature or arrange separate local recordings and a backup.

For a normal iPhone phone call rather than FaceTime, follow the separate phone-call recording guide. A Phone app setting should not be assumed to record every third-party calling app.

Find, share and check the recording

In Notes, open the Call Recordings folder and select the call's note. Play the audio before sharing; the recording begins when the control is activated, so an earlier conversation may be missing. Apple's call-recording guide describes playback and available audio-sharing options. Only share the conversation with people authorized to receive it.

In supported languages and regions, a transcript may be available in Notes, but a saved recording does not guarantee a transcript. Review names, numbers and quotations while listening to the audio. The interview transcription guide offers a review checklist.

Troubleshooting

Call Recording is missingConfirm this is an eligible one-to-one FaceTime audio call, then check your iOS version and Apple's current regional and language availability.
A video recording has no remote voicePlay the actual saved file and check the call type and app restrictions. A screen recording is not proof that remote audio was captured.
The beginning is missingRecording starts when you activate it. For a future call, obtain agreement and start before the material you need.

Common questions

Does FaceTime notify the other person?

Apple says its built-in call-recording feature plays a notice to both participants. Ask for agreement before recording and follow the rules that apply to everyone on the call.

Can I record a group FaceTime call with this feature?

Apple documents FaceTime audio call recording for a call with one other person. Check the current feature documentation and arrange an alternative for a group if needed.

Can cleanup recover a voice that was not recorded?

No. Audio processing can sometimes reduce competing sound, but it cannot reliably recover a voice absent from the saved file. Test the recording method before an important conversation.
