How to Record a Conversation on Android

Record an in-person conversation on a Pixel or Samsung Galaxy, test both speakers, and choose a separate method for phone calls.

In this guide
The short version

For an in-person conversation, agree on the recording, open the phone's recorder and place it where it can hear everyone. Make and play a short test before the full take. A phone call requires a separate supported call-recording method.

To record an in-person conversation on Android, ask the participants to agree, open your phone's recorder app, and place the phone where its microphone can hear everyone. Record a short test with each person speaking, play it back, and adjust the position before starting the full conversation. Save and name the recording when finished.

Recorder apps and controls vary by manufacturer. Pixel phones use Google's Recorder on supported devices; Samsung Galaxy phones may use Samsung Voice Recorder. A phone call is different: do not assume a voice recorder app will capture both ends. Use a supported call-recording feature and check availability for your phone and region.

Record an in-person conversation on a Pixel

  1. Agree and prepare. Explain the recording's intended use and sharing. Choose a quiet room and place the phone on a stable surface where both speakers can be heard.
  2. Open Recorder. Google documents Recorder for supported Pixel phones. Tap Record and have each person speak in their normal position.
  3. Play a short test. Pause or stop the test, save it if prompted, and listen back. If one voice is faint or distorted, adjust the phone's position and record another sample.
  4. Record the conversation. Start a fresh recording, pause when appropriate, then save and name it. Check the beginning, a quiet section and the end before the speakers leave.

Google's Pixel Recorder guide describes recording and saving. App versions and controls may differ, so verify the actual saved recording rather than relying on the screen meter alone.

Optional: label speakers in a Pixel transcript

On supported Pixel 6 and later devices, Google describes optional speaker labels in Recorder settings. Recorder can label detected speakers in the transcript; Google currently lists US English for this feature. Check each label against the audio, especially when voices overlap. A label is not a separate audio track or a guarantee of identity.

Google says enabling speaker labels analyzes voices on the device and uses temporary voice models; its speaker-label documentation describes the process and notes that voice models may be considered biometric data in some regions. Review the setting and your participants' expectations before enabling it.

Record an in-person conversation on a Samsung Galaxy

  1. Open Voice Recorder. If available on your device, check its recording modes in Settings. Samsung describes Standard for balanced recording and Interview for sound directed toward the top and bottom of the phone.
  2. Position the phone for the selected mode and record a short sample with each speaker. Play it back before relying on Interview mode; it does not guarantee that all unwanted sounds disappear.
  3. Start the full recording, then stop, name and save it. Listen to quiet answers and the ending. Samsung's Voice Recorder guide documents the mode controls; availability and menus vary by device and software.

On another Android phone, look for its included recorder or use an app you trust. Check microphone permissions, recording location and sharing settings, then test the actual file. A recorder's name or format may differ from Pixel and Galaxy.

Position the microphone for both people

Place the phone between speakers when practical, without covering microphone openings. A phone next to one person can make the other much quieter. Reduce handling and table noise, and avoid placing the device beside a fan or music source. Compare a short sample at two positions rather than assuming the nearest or loudest setting is best.

For a longer interview, check available battery and storage, keep interruptions to a minimum, and use an agreed backup where appropriate. A separate microphone or recording for each person offers more control if the setup supports it; a single mixed recording does not automatically become independent speaker tracks.

What about a conversation over a phone call?

Call recording depends on the phone, calling app, carrier, region and software. Google and Samsung document features on supported devices, and their controls can notify participants when recording begins. Obtain agreement and verify the actual saved file; do not rely on the regular voice recorder to capture both sides of a call.

See how to record a phone call on Android for the separate Google Phone and Samsung workflows and their availability checks. A remote meeting app may have its own recording permissions and storage settings.

Save and review the recording

Keep the original and share it only with authorized people. Google's Recorder sharing guide distinguishes sharing an audio file, transcript and link. Samsung's Voice Recorder provides sharing options, but the file location and format can vary. Verify the recipient can open the intended file.

For a supported short MP3 or WAV, the audio trimmer can make a local excerpt; check its limits and note the original start time. If a distinct unwanted sound overlaps speech, the separate voice isolator can test a supported file. It can leave noise or change words, and AI WAV downloads require an account and credits. Compare with the original rather than treating a processed result as proof of missing speech.

Common questions

Can one Android phone record two people?

Yes, for an in-person conversation if the recorder and microphone can hear both. A short test is important because distance, room noise and phone position affect the result.

Does a speaker-labeled transcript give me separate audio tracks?

No. Labels identify sections of text attributed to speakers; they do not automatically split a mixed recording into isolated files. Check the labels against the original audio.

Can I record a phone call with the regular voice recorder?

Do not assume it will capture both ends. Check the calling app's supported recording feature and its device, carrier and region requirements, with the participants' agreement.
