How to Remove Audio from a Video on iPhone

Mute a video clip in iMovie on iPhone, export and verify the result, or choose a different workflow when you need to keep the voice.

In this guide
The short version

To silence a clip in an iPhone iMovie project, select it, open its audio controls and tap Mute. Export and play the finished video. Muting removes all audible sound from that clip; it does not selectively keep speech.

To remove audio from a video on iPhone, add the clip to an iMovie movie project, select it in the timeline, open its audio controls and tap Mute. Export the movie and play the saved copy to confirm it is silent. Muting the video clip turns off its recorded sound, including both speech and background noise; other audio clips in the project may still be audible.

If you want to keep the voice while reducing music or noise, muting the entire clip is not the right finish. Keep the original and consider the separate voice-isolation workflow below.

Want to keep speech while reducing noise? See the iPhone video noise-reduction guide; muting the clip removes all its recorded audio.

Mute a video clip in iMovie on iPhone

  1. Open a movie project. Add the video to an iMovie project and keep the original available.
  2. Select the clip. Tap the video clip in the timeline to show its editing controls.
  3. Mute its sound. Tap the Audio or Volume button, then tap the mute control next to the volume slider. Apple shows a mute icon on the timeline clip when its sound is off. See Apple's iMovie audio instructions.
  4. Check other tracks. A separate music track, voiceover or sound effect can still play. Mute or remove those separately if the whole export should be silent.
  5. Export and listen. Export the movie to a new file, open it and play several sections with the device volume on. Check the exported copy rather than relying on a muted playback setting.

The labels and layout can vary with iMovie and iOS versions. To reverse the clip mute in the project, select the clip and tap the mute control again. Keep an untouched original if you may need the recorded sound later.

Save the soundtrack before muting

If you want a separate audio copy, the free video-to-audio converter accepts a supported local MP4 or MOV and prepares a WAV or MP3 in the browser. Input and output must each fit 50 MiB, duration is limited to five minutes, and decoded audio must be mono or stereo. Codec support and available memory vary by device. The tool reads locally without an account or upload; it does not modify the video or isolate individual sounds.

For Shortcuts and iMovie options, see how to extract audio from video on iPhone. Keep the original timing if you intend to put the audio back into an edit.

Keep speech while reducing background sound

When the original project has separate microphone and music tracks, adjust those tracks first. For a finished mix, you can test the voice isolator with a spoken-voice description and compare Isolated sound with the original. Music or noise may remain and quiet words may change. This is a separate AI service; downloads require an account and sufficient credits, with the cost shown before download.

The result is audio, not a newly rendered video. Bring the selected WAV back into your editor, mute the old mix and check synchronization. The audio replacement guide walks through the checks.

Common questions

Why does my exported video still have sound?

Check for a separate soundtrack, voiceover or duplicated clip in the project. Also confirm you exported after changing the clip's mute setting and are playing the new file.

Does muting remove only background music?

No. Muting the recorded clip turns down its entire sound, including speech and effects. Separate project tracks or source isolation are needed to treat individual sounds differently.

Does a muted player mean the video is silent?

No. A player or device volume control can silence playback without changing the saved file. Open the export and test it with playback volume enabled.
