How to Remove Background Noise in DaVinci Resolve

Compare dialogue cleanup options in DaVinci Resolve, including Studio Voice Isolation, separate tracks, and a source-isolation workflow for a finished mix.

In this guide
The short version

Start with the cleanest available dialogue track. In Resolve Studio, compare Voice Isolation on a difficult clip; if the noise is on a separate track, adjust that track first. Listen for lost words and check the final video export.

To reduce background noise in DaVinci Resolve, first check whether the unwanted sound is on its own timeline track. If it is, lower or mute that track and listen to the dialogue. For noise already mixed with the voice, DaVinci Resolve Studio offers Voice Isolation; enable it on the affected clip or track and compare a difficult sentence with the original.

Blackmagic Design's Fairlight training guide for Resolve 18 identifies Voice Isolation as a Studio feature. Controls and edition availability can change, so check the documentation for your installed version. A quieter pause is not enough: the words must remain intelligible where the noise overlaps speech.

Try Voice Isolation in Resolve Studio

  1. Keep a reference. Duplicate the project or preserve the original clip. Locate a short section with a quiet word, a pause and the loudest overlap.
  2. Select the affected audio. In Resolve Studio, select the dialogue clip and open its audio controls in the Inspector. Blackmagic's guide describes Voice Isolation as a Track FX available on a clip through the Inspector or on a track through the mixer or Inspector.
  3. Enable Voice Isolation and compare. Toggle the effect and adjust its available amount while listening. Start with a restrained change and compare the same sentence with the unprocessed version at a similar playback level. A track-level effect can affect every clip on that track; choose clip-level treatment when only one clip needs it.
  4. Check difficult speech. Listen for softened word beginnings, altered breaths, watery texture and changes to ambience. Back off if the voice becomes less natural or a word is lost. The best amount depends on the recording.
  5. Review the finished timeline. Play transitions into and out of the processed clip, then export and listen to the final video. A local improvement may leave an audible jump in room sound at an edit.

Fairlight also offers noise-reduction tools. Blackmagic's Fairlight overview describes learning a noise sample for its noise-reduction plug-in. Availability and controls depend on the installed version and edition; check those before relying on a specific effect. A representative noise-only passage matters for profile-based reduction, and stronger settings can damage dialogue.

What if Voice Isolation is unavailable?

Start with the cleanest original microphone or a separate dialogue track. If a distracting sound appears only between words, a careful local volume edit may help without processing the whole sentence; preserve the timeline duration and compare room tone at both edges. A gate reacts to level, so it cannot reliably remove a loud sound underneath speech and may cut quiet words.

For a mixed recording, you can also compare a separate Saturalabs voice-isolation attempt. Upload a supported MP3, WAV, MP4 or MOV up to 50 MiB (52.43 MB), describe the spoken voice, and review Isolated sound. AI WAV downloads require an account and sufficient credits, shown before download. Music and noise may remain, and the estimated voice may lose wanted detail; it is not guaranteed to outperform the original.

Return a separate audio result to the timeline

  1. Keep the original position. Import the selected WAV and align it with the same starting point as the source. If you processed an excerpt, place it at that excerpt's original timeline position.
  2. Mute the old mix while comparing. Playing both versions can double the dialogue. Listen across each transition and restore any wanted ambience carefully.
  3. Check sync and export. Inspect lip sync at the beginning and end, then play the actual video export. The audio replacement guide covers offsets and transition checks.

Can noise be removed without changing the voice?

Not always. When voice and noise overlap, any method can leave noise or alter speech. Compare the hardest phrase against the untouched original and another take if available. For steady noise, the Audacity noise-reduction guide explains a profile-based alternative and how to inspect the sound being removed.
