How to Remove Sound from a Video on Android

Mute a video in Google Photos on supported Android devices, save and check the result, or choose an audio-isolation workflow when you need to keep speech.

In this guide
The short version

Use a video editor's mute control to silence the complete soundtrack, save an edited copy and play that copy with your device volume on. Muting does not selectively preserve a speaker or remove only music.

To remove sound from a video on Android, open the video in a compatible editor, mute its audio and save an edited copy. Then play the saved copy with your phone's volume turned up. Muting the device or a playback preview is not proof that the file you share is silent.

Muting silences the recorded soundtrack as a whole, including speech, music and effects. If you need to keep a speaker and reduce only a competing sound, use the separate workflow below.

Mute a video in Google Photos on a supported Pixel

Google's Google Photos video-editing instructions describe an Audio control for Pixel 8 and later. Menu names and availability can change with the app and device.

  1. Keep the original. Open Google Photos and select the video. Play a short section first to confirm the original contains the sound you intend to remove.
  2. Open the audio controls. In the documented Pixel workflow, tap Audio and choose Mute. This is different from turning down the phone's playback volume.
  3. Save the edit. Tap Save to save a copy as described in Google's instructions. If the interface offers a different save option, check which file will be changed and retain the original.
  4. Verify the actual copy. Open the saved video and play several moments with device volume enabled. If it still has sound, check that the edited copy, rather than the original, is the one being played or shared.

What if my Android phone shows different controls?

Google separately describes a Mute control for non-Pixel devices in the same Photos guide. A playback mute may only silence what you hear, so look for an editing workflow that explicitly saves a muted copy and verify that copy. If your app offers only playback muting, use a video editor that can mute the clip and export a new video; the precise controls vary by app and version. Google documents the Pixel 8-and-later Audio workflow separately, so do not assume it appears on an earlier Pixel.

If an editor project contains added music, narration or effects on separate tracks, muting the source clip may leave those tracks audible. Check the entire exported video, including the beginning, ending and any added soundtrack. To reduce a detected sound instead of muting everything, supported Galaxy devices offer a separate Samsung Audio Eraser workflow.

Save the audio or keep the voice

To retain the whole soundtrack before muting, the free video-to-audio converter can prepare WAV or MP3 locally from compatible mono or stereo MP4/MOV files. Input and output are each limited to 50 MiB, and duration to five minutes; browser codec and memory support vary. It does not modify the video or separate individual sounds. See extract audio from video on Android for additional options.

To keep speech while reducing a competing sound in a finished recording, try the voice isolator with a spoken-voice description and review Isolated sound. Music or noise can remain, and quiet words can change. Supported uploads include MP3, WAV, MP4 and MOV up to 50 MiB; AI downloads require an account and sufficient credits. The output is audio: return it to a video editor, mute the old mix and check alignment using the audio replacement guide.

Why is my supposedly muted video still audible?

First confirm that you saved an edited copy and are playing that copy rather than the source. In a multitrack project, check for separate music or narration. Finally, replay the exported file with device volume on before sharing it. A silent preview is useful, but it is not a substitute for checking the file that will actually be sent.
