In this guide
Use Voice Memos to trim a recording made there, a browser trimmer for a supported short MP3 or WAV in Files, or GarageBand for a timeline edit. Keep a copy of the source, listen to both cut boundaries, and check the exported file before sharing.
To trim audio on an iPhone, choose the method based on where the recording lives. If you are starting a new take, see how to record audio on iPhone. For a Voice Memo, use its built-in trim controls. For a short MP3 or WAV in Files, use a compatible browser trimmer. GarageBand offers a timeline when you need more than a single excerpt. In every case, keep an original and listen to the saved result, especially the beginning and ending.
Which method should you use?
| Your recording | A useful starting point | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| A recording in Voice Memos | Use the app's trim handles. | Trim keeps the selection; Delete removes it. Save a new recording or duplicate the original first. |
| A short MP3 or WAV in Files | Use the browser audio trimmer. | One continuous excerpt, up to five minutes and 50 MiB input; WAV output also has a 50 MiB limit. |
| An audio file for a timeline edit | Import into GarageBand. | Song-section length, format conversion and export settings matter. |
Trim a Voice Memo on iPhone
Apple's Voice Memos editing guide describes the current controls. Their appearance and save steps can vary by iOS version.
- Keep an original. Duplicate the recording first if you want a separate working copy; Apple's duplicate instructions show where to find that option.
- Open the trim controls. Select the recording, open its editing or More menu and choose Trim.
- Set the boundaries. Drag the yellow handles around the section. Pinch to zoom for a closer view and play the selection to check words or note tails.
- Choose the correct action. Trim keeps the portion inside the handles and removes the outside. Delete removes the selected portion. Apply the edit and, when offered, choose Save as New Recording to retain the original.
Check the first consonant and last word after saving. A waveform shows activity but does not tell you whether a sentence is complete. If you need an MP3 rather than the Voice Memos format, see how to convert a Voice Memo to MP3 and keep the original recording.
Trim an MP3 or WAV from Files in your browser
- Choose the file. Open the audio trimmer in a compatible browser and select a local mono or stereo MP3 or WAV. The input must be at most five minutes and 50 MiB; browser codec support varies.
- Set the source positions. Enter start and end in seconds or use the sliders. For a 15-second passage from 1:10 to 1:25, enter 70 and 85. End is the position in the original, not the desired duration.
- Choose WAV or MP3. WAV is 48 kHz 16-bit PCM; MP3 is re-encoded at the chosen bitrate. The WAV output must also fit 50 MiB. Re-encoding MP3 is lossy and may add delay or padding.
- Prepare, preview and save. Listen to the actual prepared file, especially both boundaries, and download it before leaving the page. The selected audio is processed in the browser and is not uploaded to Saturalabs.
The optional short edge fade can soften a cut click but may affect an attack at the boundary. Include a little lead-in or turn the fade off when the exact onset matters. This tool makes one continuous excerpt; it does not remove a middle passage in one operation. For multiple clips, prepare them separately and compare the audio joiner. For recordings exported from Voice Memos, see how to merge Voice Memos on iPhone.
Trim an imported audio file in GarageBand
GarageBand can import supported audio from Files into a project. Apple's import guide recommends setting the song section to Automatic if you need to import the entire file; otherwise a region may stop at the end of the section. In Tracks view, open the Loop Browser, choose Files, browse for the audio and drag it into the project.
Select the region and adjust its edges as described in Apple's region editing guide. Preview the start and end, then export a suitable audio file and listen to it separately. GarageBand converts imported audio to its supported project format when necessary, so the exported result is not guaranteed to be the original encoded data. Use a project editor when you need multiple cuts, layers or transitions.
Why won't my file open?
Confirm the file is downloaded to the device and is an actual audio file rather than a share link. The browser trimmer accepts supported MP3 and WAV, not M4A directly. For a short compatible M4A, the M4A-to-WAV converter can make a working WAV; check its own limits and save the result before selecting it in the trimmer. For longer files or unsupported codecs, use an editor that accepts the source.
Common questions
Can I trim audio on iPhone without uploading it?
Voice Memos edits its own recordings on the device. The Saturalabs browser trimmer processes a selected supported MP3 or WAV locally and does not upload it. Browser and device support vary.
Does trimming remove background music?
No. A time cut keeps all sounds in the selected interval. To test separating a voice from music, use the separate voice isolation workflow; AI downloads require an account and credits.
Can I recover an overwritten original?
Do not assume it can be recovered. Save a new recording or duplicate the source before editing, and check your backup or the app's own recovery options if you already overwrote it.
