Save a video you have permission to use, extract its soundtrack to a compatible audio file and choose a short passage. Export it as a ringtone with GarageBand on iPhone, or set the saved file with Files by Google or the phone's sound settings on Android.
To turn a video into a ringtone, save a video you can use, extract its audio to a file and select the passage you want. On iPhone, import the audio into GarageBand and export it as a ringtone. On Android, save a compatible audio file and select it through Files by Google or your phone's ringtone settings.
The video and ringtone are different files: extracting audio creates a soundtrack, while setting the ringtone is a separate phone step. Start with your own recording or a copy you have permission to use. A public post or streaming link does not by itself grant permission to reuse its audio.
1. Save a usable video and extract its soundtrack
- Locate an accessible video file on your phone, such as an original clip you recorded. If it is in Photos, save or share a copy to Files if your browser's file picker needs it.
- Open the free video-to-audio converter and select a supported local MP4 or MOV. It accepts a file up to five minutes and 50 MiB, with mono or stereo audio; browser codec support varies.
- Choose WAV or MP3, convert, and preview the actual output. The output must also fit 50 MiB. Download the file and note where it is saved.
The converter reads the file locally and does not take a YouTube or TikTok URL. It extracts the existing mixed soundtrack, including voice, music and effects; it does not identify or separate one sound. For other methods on iPhone, see how to extract audio from a video on iPhone.
2. Choose the part you want
Listen for an opening that is recognizable without the picture. If the useful sound starts later, use the audio trimmer to make one short excerpt from a supported mono or stereo MP3 or WAV up to five minutes and 50 MiB. Enter the start and end in seconds, prepare the file and listen to the preview before downloading. WAV output must also fit 50 MiB. A cut that starts too late can remove the first syllable or impact.
For example, if the desired sound begins at 12 seconds and ends at 20 seconds, enter 12 and 20 for an eight-second excerpt. Keep enough space for the attack and ending, then play the downloaded file. MP3 is re-encoded and may add delay or padding; WAV is a larger 48 kHz, 16-bit PCM working copy in the trimmer.
If the desired effect is mixed with speech or music, an isolation test may help. Describe the audible effect and compare Isolated sound with the original; it can leave bleed or alter the effect. AI downloads require an account and sufficient credits, with cost shown before download. Isolation does not grant reuse rights.
3. Set the sound as an iPhone ringtone
- Save the extracted or trimmed audio in Files. Open GarageBand on iPhone and start a new audio recording project.
- In Tracks view, open the Loops Browser and choose Files → Browse items from the Files app. Touch and hold the audio file, then drag it to the beginning of the track.
- Trim the region if needed and move it all the way left so the ringtone does not start with silence. GarageBand ringtones can be up to 30 seconds.
- Open My Songs, select the project and choose Share → Ringtone. Name it, tap Export, then choose Use sound as → Standard Ringtone. Listen to a test call.
Apple documents these steps and the 30-second limit in its custom iPhone ringtone guide. For more detail, including a Voice Memo source and troubleshooting, follow the iPhone ringtone walkthrough. A downloaded WAV or MP3 in Files is not automatically installed as a ringtone.
4. Set the sound as an Android ringtone
- Save the extracted or trimmed audio on the phone. Use a format your device accepts; MP3 is one option supported by Samsung Galaxy's documented workflow.
- In Files by Google, find and play the file, open More → Set as ringtone, and follow any system-settings permission prompt. Google's instructions describe the confirmation step.
- On a Samsung Galaxy, you can instead open Settings → Sounds and vibration → Ringtone, tap the plus button, select the stored file and tap Done. Check the optional selected-highlights setting if the wrong passage plays; Samsung's guide describes it.
- Test with an incoming call and check ringtone volume and sound mode. Menu names and supported formats vary by Android device.

Can I use a sound from TikTok or YouTube?
Use an original video you uploaded or a file the creator has authorized you to use, and check the rights and service terms for your intended use. If a creator owns the video but licensed its music separately, that does not automatically give you rights to the music. The converter needs a compatible local video file; it does not download from a social-media link. For a YouTube upload you own, the YouTube audio guide explains available source-file options.
Troubleshooting
| Problem | What to check |
|---|---|
| The video will not convert | Check the local file, duration, size, audio track and browser codec support. Try a supported file or a desktop editor. |
| Music or voices remain in the audio | Extraction preserves the mixed soundtrack. Use an original separate track or test isolation and listen for artifacts. |
| The ringtone starts in the wrong place | Trim a new excerpt. On iPhone, move the GarageBand region to the beginning; on supported Samsung devices, check selected highlights. |
| The downloaded file is not a ringtone | Complete the GarageBand ringtone export on iPhone, or select the stored file in Android's ringtone controls. |
Common questions
Can I make a ringtone from a video without a computer?
Yes, if your phone can open the video and the audio tools support its format. Extract and save an audio file, then follow the iPhone or Android setting steps above.
Will the ringtone include the video picture?
No. A ringtone is an audio sound for an incoming call. The extracted file contains the soundtrack, not the video image.
How long can an iPhone ringtone be?
GarageBand exports ringtones up to 30 seconds. It can shorten a longer project automatically, or you can cancel and choose the passage yourself.
