What Is an AMR Audio File? Playback and AMR-to-MP3 Conversion

Learn what an AMR audio file is and how to open or convert a compatible speech recording to MP3 or WAV, with a tested FFmpeg example.

In this guide
The short version

AMR is a speech-oriented audio coding format often encountered in voice recordings. Check whether your player supports the actual file, keep the original, and use a compatible decoder to make a WAV or MP3 copy when needed. Conversion does not restore detail lost during speech encoding.

An AMR audio file usually contains speech encoded with Adaptive Multi-Rate, a family of codecs designed for efficient voice transmission and storage. You may encounter a file ending in .amr in a voice-recording or messaging workflow. If your usual player cannot open it, try a player or editor that supports the specific codec and file.

AMR is different from MP3 and WAV. Changing .amr to .mp3 in the filename does not convert the audio; a compatible program must decode the source and create a new file.

AMR vs. AMR-WB

AMR narrowband and AMR-WB are related speech codecs with different bandwidths and encoding modes. The IETF's AMR specification describes AMR's 8 kHz sampling and AMR-WB's 16 kHz sampling. The wider-band version can represent a broader range of speech frequencies, but the quality of an individual recording also depends on its source and encoding.

Audio codecs can be stored or transmitted in different formats. A filename alone does not prove which codec, channels or recording quality a file contains. Use a compatible media inspector when those details matter.

How to open an AMR recording

  1. Keep a copy of the original. Confirm the file has finished downloading and that you are permitted to open or share it.
  2. Try a compatible player. Open the file in a program that supports its AMR variant. VideoLAN lists AMR among VLC's supported audio formats; support can vary by version, platform and file.
  3. Play the complete recording. Check its beginning, ending and duration. If it is silent or rejected, the file may be incomplete, damaged, protected or use a codec the app cannot decode.
  4. Choose a copy for your next step. Keep AMR if the recipient accepts it, or export to a compatible format. Ask the sender for the original recording if you need a higher-quality source.

AMR vs. MP3 vs. WAV

FormatTypical useWhat to know
AMRSpeech-oriented recordings and communications.Compact voice coding; playback support varies.
MP3A broadly supported compressed listening copy.Lossy encoding; making an MP3 from AMR adds a new lossy encode.
PCM WAVA working file for an editor that accepts WAV.Often larger. Decoding AMR to PCM does not restore detail missing from the source.

WAV is a container and can hold different encodings. If a recipient requests a specific WAV format, check sample rate, bit depth and channels rather than assuming every WAV is interchangeable. The WAV guide explains the container.

How to convert AMR to WAV or MP3

Use an audio editor or converter that explicitly supports decoding your AMR file. Open the source, choose WAV or MP3 as the export format, save a new file and listen to it. If the app cannot open the file, check its codec support rather than changing the filename.

If you already use FFmpeg, the following example decodes the first audio stream to 16-bit PCM WAV. Replace the names with your own paths and choose a new output name:

ffmpeg -n -i "input.amr" -map 0:a:0 -vn -c:a pcm_s16le "output.wav"

The -n option prevents overwriting an existing output; -map 0:a:0 chooses the first audio stream. This command does not explicitly request resampling or a channel conversion. Inspect the exported file if a specific format is required. FFmpeg documents an AMR-NB decoder and optional codec libraries; builds differ, so confirm the installed version can decode your source.

Convert AMR directly to MP3 with FFmpeg

If your FFmpeg build includes an AMR decoder and the libmp3lame encoder, this example creates an MP3 directly from the first audio stream:

ffmpeg -n -i "input.amr" -map 0:a:0 -vn -c:a libmp3lame -q:a 4 "output.mp3"

The -q:a 4 setting asks LAME for variable-bitrate encoding, so the resulting bitrate and size depend on the audio and encoder. The -n option prevents overwriting an existing file. We tested the command on one FFmpeg AMR sample: the resulting MP3 was mono, decoded at 8 kHz and had the same reported 4.36-second duration. That check does not establish compatibility with every AMR file or FFmpeg build.

Play the output and verify the reported format and duration in your player or with FFprobe. For a graphical workflow, use an MP3 export in a compatible editor. A new lossy encode may further alter the sound, and neither MP3 nor WAV conversion can recreate frequencies or details already discarded by the original AMR encoding.

Trim or check a converted file

The Saturalabs audio trimmer accepts supported short MP3 or WAV files, not AMR directly. After converting separately, select the WAV, choose a continuous passage and preview the output. Input and output must fit the tool's five-minute and 50 MiB limits, and browser decoding support varies.

For a WAV working copy, the WAV file inspector can report stored format information for a supported file. Keep the original recording and compare the beginning and ending of the converted copy before sharing.

Common questions

Can I rename AMR to MP3?

No. Renaming changes the filename, not the encoded audio. Use a compatible decoder and MP3 exporter.

Will converting AMR to WAV improve the recording?

No. WAV can provide a convenient PCM working copy, but conversion cannot restore information that the AMR source no longer contains.

Why is an AMR file not playing?

The app may lack support for the particular AMR variant, or the file may be damaged or incomplete. Try another compatible player and, if necessary, request a fresh copy from the sender.
