YouTube Audio Library: Find Music and Sound Effects for Videos

Find and download music and sound effects in YouTube Studio's Audio Library, check attribution, and prepare audio for your video.

In this guide
The short version

Open Audio Library in YouTube Studio, preview a music track or sound effect, and download the MP3. Check the track's displayed license and any required attribution before publishing; verify permissions separately for uses outside YouTube.

The YouTube Audio Library is a collection of production music and sound effects inside YouTube Studio. Sign in to Studio, open Audio library, choose the Music or Sound effects tab, preview a file and download the MP3. Before publishing, check the selected track's license and whether its attribution must appear in your description.

YouTube's Audio Library instructions explain search, downloads, attribution and monetization. The interface and catalog can change; check the current information shown for the exact track you use.

How to open YouTube Audio Library

  1. Sign in to YouTube Studio.
  2. Select Audio library in the left menu. YouTube also provides the direct Audio Library link.
  3. Choose Music for tracks or Sound effects for individual effects. Preview a candidate before downloading it.

Audio Library is a Studio feature. A video uploaded by another channel and labeled “royalty-free” is not automatically an Audio Library file. YouTube says it cannot take responsibility for issues with music from other channels or libraries; check the actual source and license.

Find free music in the Audio Library

  1. Open the Music tab.
  2. Search by title, artist or keyword, or use the available filters for genre, mood, artist, attribution and duration.
  3. Play a track and listen through the section you intend to use. Check whether its beginning, dynamics and ending fit the video.
  4. Review the license type. YouTube offers filters for Attribution required and Attribution not required.
  5. On a computer, hover over the track's date and select Download. YouTube says the download is an MP3 file.

You can star tracks for later comparison. A track that sounds good alone may mask speech in the actual mix; preview it with the busiest dialogue before choosing. For placing it in an already uploaded eligible video, see how to add music in YouTube Studio.

Find YouTube Audio Library sound effects

  1. Open the Sound effects tab in Audio Library.
  2. Search for the audible event, such as a bell, footsteps or a door. YouTube says effects can also be filtered by category and duration.
  3. Preview the effect, listening for the start, body and tail. Check that the duration fits the action in your scene.
  4. Download the MP3 and import it into your video or audio editor. Keep the original download and note where it came from.

A sound effect from the library is an existing file, not a sound generated from your prompt or extracted from another video's soundtrack. If you need a specific sound that is already audible in a recording you are authorized to use, the sound-effect extractor can estimate that source; its result may lose the attack or tail or retain other sounds, and AI WAV downloads require an account and credits.

Do you need to credit the music?

It depends on the selected track. YouTube says music in its Audio Library with a Creative Commons license requires attribution in the video's description. In the track's License type column, open the Creative Commons icon and use the provided copy control to obtain the attribution text, then paste it into the description. Check that it remains present when you publish.

YouTube also provides an Attribution not required filter for music with its standard Audio Library license. Do not infer a track's terms from its title or from another download; read the information attached to that track. The official Audio Library guide describes these options.

Can you monetize videos using Audio Library music?

YouTube says creators in the YouTube Partner Program can monetize videos with Audio Library music and sound effects, and that copyright-safe downloads from the library will not be claimed by a rights holder through Content ID. Follow the track's displayed conditions, including required attribution. Other parts of a video, such as footage, music from another source or a separate recording, may have their own rights and platform requirements.

YouTube's guidance is specific to its platform; it does not establish permission for every off-platform use. Check the track's applicable terms and the intended destination before using it in a podcast, game or another service. YouTube notes that it cannot provide legal guidance for issues outside the platform.

Prepare the audio for your edit

  1. Keep the downloaded original. Save the track title, creator, source URL and displayed license or attribution information with the project.
  2. Choose the useful section. For music, find an entrance and ending that fit the scene. For an effect, leave enough room for its attack and decay.
  3. Import it into an editor. Place audio on a separate timeline layer so you can adjust it without unnecessarily changing the original dialogue.
  4. Balance and preview. Check important words, sound cues and transitions at a comfortable level. Use fades when appropriate without hiding a first consonant or final note.
  5. Review the export. Listen to the actual saved video from the opening through the ending and verify any required attribution before sharing.

The Saturalabs audio trimmer can make a separate excerpt from a supported short local MP3 or WAV. The fade tool can soften its outer edges. These tools do not download from YouTube, add a track to a video or apply a license; import the downloaded file into a suitable editor and retain the original.
