How to test your microphone online

  1. 01 / ALLOW

    Start and grant access

Connect your microphone and press Start microphone test. Allow access when your browser asks. Your browser or operating system selects the input device.

  2. 02 / SPEAK

    Watch the input meter

Speak at a normal distance and volume. A moving meter indicates that the browser is receiving a signal. It cannot tell you whether the voice is clear or which microphone is active.

  3. 03 / LISTEN

    Record and play back

Record the 10-second sample and listen through headphones or speakers at a low volume. Check words, distortion and room noise. Stop the microphone when finished.

Troubleshooting

What to do if your microphone test is quiet or silent

First check the physical mute switch and cable. In your device settings, select the intended input and confirm that the browser has microphone permission. If you have a headset and a built-in microphone, tap gently near each or speak at different distances to confirm which one is capturing sound.

If the meter moves but the recording sounds quiet, check both microphone input gain and your playback volume. Increase input gain gradually and listen for distortion on louder words. A meter reaching its maximum can indicate clipping, but a low meter reading alone does not establish that a recording will be clean. Read how microphone gain affects a recording.

Pause briefly before and after a sentence to hear room noise, then listen for clicks and overlapping sounds while speaking. Move closer to the microphone or reduce the noise at its source and record another sample. For an existing recording, the voice isolator is a separate upload-based service; this test does not remove noise or change your live call audio.

The browser may apply its own microphone processing. The meter displays relative digital peak level, not a calibrated sound-pressure reading, and the recording format depends on browser support. The sample is temporary; save your actual work in your recording application.

Why is my microphone not working?

Compare the same microphone in your device settings and in this browser test. The result helps narrow down whether the problem is the input, permissions, or playback.

Test the microphone in Windows 11

Open Settings → System → Sound. Under Input, select the microphone and open its properties. Use Start test, speak, stop the test and play the recorded sample. If access is blocked, check Settings → Privacy & security → Microphone, including access for desktop apps. See Microsoft’s microphone troubleshooting steps.

Check microphone input on a Mac

Open System Settings → Sound → Input, select the intended microphone and speak while watching the input level. If the browser cannot use it, check System Settings → Privacy & Security → Microphone for browser access, and check the browser’s site permission. Apple explains sound input settings and microphone access. Menu names can vary by system version.

If the system test works but a particular calling application still cannot hear you, check its own microphone selection and mute controls. This browser test does not change settings in other applications. If you can hear the voice but it sounds dull, follow the muffled microphone troubleshooting guide.

A few useful answers

Online microphone test questions

How do I test my microphone online?

Start the test, allow microphone access, and speak at your normal level. The meter should move. Record a short sample and play it back to check intelligibility and noise.

Is my microphone audio uploaded?

This test reads your microphone in the browser and does not send the audio to Saturalabs. A playback sample is temporary and disappears when you leave or record again.

Why does the meter not move?

Check that the intended microphone is connected, unmuted and selected in your browser or operating system. Allow microphone access and try speaking closer to it. Other applications or device settings may affect availability.

Why can I see a signal but hear no playback?

Check speaker or headphone output, volume and the player controls. A moving meter confirms an input signal, not that playback is routed correctly. Some browsers do not support making a recording sample.

Does this test measure microphone quality or sound pressure?

No. The meter shows a relative digital input peak, not calibrated sound pressure or loudness. Listen to a sample for distortion, unwanted background sound and clarity.
