In this guide
In Discord’s desktop or browser settings, choose your microphone under Voice & Video, then find Noise Suppression and select Krisp where available. Compare the same speech and background sounds with it on and off.
Discord noise suppression reduces background sound from your microphone during voice chat. On desktop or in a supported browser, open User Settings → Voice & Video, find Noise Suppression under Voice, and select Krisp to enable it. Return to that control and select an available alternative or turn it off to compare. Menu options can vary by device and version.
It processes your outgoing microphone, not everyone else’s. A friend’s keyboard can still be audible if it comes through their microphone. Noise suppression can also affect quiet speech or music, so the best setting is the one that sounds right in your actual call.
How to turn Discord noise suppression on or off
- Open Discord and select the cogwheel beside your user name to open User Settings.
- Choose Voice & Video, and under Voice select the microphone you intend to use as the input device.
- Scroll to Noise Suppression and select Krisp if available. To disable Krisp, return to the same setting and choose an available off or alternative option.
- Under Mic Test, select Let’s Check. Speak a normal sentence, then repeat it while the fan or keyboard is audible. Stop the test and compare with suppression disabled.
- Ask a trusted participant how you sound in the actual call. Adjust the microphone position and choose the setting that preserves the words you need heard.
Discord’s Krisp FAQ documents the control and notes that high CPU usage can automatically turn Krisp off. Its mic-test guide says the built-in test is available on desktop and browser; running it while in a voice channel temporarily mutes and deafens you until the test ends.
Where is the setting on mobile?
On mobile, Discord’s Krisp FAQ gives two routes:
- From settings: tap your avatar, then the settings cog. Under App Settings, tap Voice, scroll to Noise Suppression and tap Krisp to enable it. Return to the same control to disable it.
- During a voice channel: tap the channel name in the top left, scroll to Noise Suppression and tap the control beside Krisp. Swipe down to close the menu.
Discord lists Krisp support for Windows, Linux, Mac, Android and iOS; its FAQ says Mac support requires Apple silicon and macOS 12 or later. The same FAQ documents desktop browser support in Chrome and Firefox as of October 30, 2023. Availability and labels may change, so check the current Discord instructions for your device. If the option is missing or does not stay on, update the app, check compatibility and compare the available settings rather than assuming it is active.
Krisp, other suppression options and input sensitivity
| Control | What it changes | When to compare it |
|---|---|---|
| Krisp noise suppression | Processes your microphone to reduce background noise during chat. | Try it for typing or a fan; listen for changes to quiet words. |
| Another available option or off | Changes or disables that suppression choice; available labels vary. | Compare in a quiet room, or when wanted music or speech is affected. |
| Voice Activity sensitivity | Controls when voice input activates; it is separate from noise suppression. | If the beginning or end of a sentence disappears, test sensitivity with your quietest words. |
| Push to Talk | Transmits while the assigned control is held rather than relying on voice activation. | Useful for pauses with typing; it does not remove typing while the control is held. |
Discord notes that Krisp can reduce voice quality in a quiet setup and is intended for environments with non-human background noise. Its input modes guide explains sensitivity and Push to Talk. Avoid changing several processing settings at once: you will not know which change helped.
Discord noise suppression not working? Try these checks
| What you hear | What to check next |
|---|---|
| Your background is still loud | Confirm the intended microphone is selected and Krisp remains enabled. Move the microphone closer to your mouth and farther from the keyboard or fan; test again with and without suppression. |
| Someone else’s background is loud | Ask that participant to check their own microphone and settings. Your setting does not filter their outgoing microphone. |
| Krisp turns off again | Discord says high CPU usage can trigger an automatic shutoff. Reduce other demanding work, then re-enable and test it. |
| Your voice cuts in and out | Compare suppression off, then check Voice Activity sensitivity and input mode separately. Speak softly as well as loudly; do not judge by silence alone. |
| No microphone signal | Check input selection, mute state and operating-system or browser microphone permission. Use Discord’s mic test and follow its troubleshooting guide if the input is still missing. |
| Echo or doubled speech | Use headphones and check for speaker sound returning to a microphone or duplicate monitoring. See the microphone echo guide. |
For an independent input check, the Saturalabs microphone test can play back a short local sample. It tests the browser-selected input; it does not change Discord settings or prove what other participants hear.
What if the noise is already in a recording?
Discord’s live setting does not retroactively edit a saved file. First obtain permission from participants to edit and upload the recording, and keep the original. If you are preparing a new recording, the Discord recording guide explains how to check microphone and call sources in OBS.
For a supported saved file, the separate Saturalabs voice isolator can estimate a voice from the mix. Describe the wanted speaker, preview the isolated sound and compare quiet words and difficult overlaps with the original. It can leave noise or alter speech, and AI downloads require an account and sufficient credits. It is a saved-file tool, not a live Discord integration. If you need to put cleaned audio back into video, use an editor and check sync.
Common questions
Is Discord noise suppression free?
Discord says its integrated Krisp feature is free and does not require a separate Krisp subscription. Availability and settings may vary by client.
Why can I still hear my friend’s keyboard?
Your suppression affects your outgoing microphone, not your friend’s. Ask them to check their input and compare their suppression setting.
Should I turn noise suppression off for music?
Compare it off and on with a listener. Processing intended for speech may reduce wanted instruments or other sounds, so choose the setting that preserves the performance.
Does Discord noise suppression fix an existing recording?
No. Live microphone processing and editing a previously saved file are separate workflows.
