In this guide
Start with the clearest isolated instrument or voice you have, convert a short passage in an audio-to-MIDI tool, then compare the MIDI notes and timing with the original. MIDI controls an instrument; it does not contain the original sound.
To convert audio to MIDI, choose a clear instrument or vocal recording, analyze it with an audio-to-MIDI tool, and edit the detected notes in a piano roll. Compare pitch, note starts and lengths with the original recording, then save or export the MIDI file for use with a software instrument.
MIDI stores performance instructions such as notes and timing; it is not a copy of the recording. A MIDI instrument generates a new sound from those instructions. Conversion is an estimate, so chords, bends, overlapping sounds and reverberation can produce missing or extra notes.
Choose an audio-to-MIDI method
| Method | Useful starting material | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Spotify Basic Pitch | A short recording of a single instrument or voice; download the generated MIDI. | Review note accuracy and pitch bends in a MIDI editor. The service is separate from Saturalabs. |
| Ableton Live | An audio clip in an edition with the relevant conversion commands. | Choose Melody, Harmony or Drums for the material and check the new MIDI track. |
| FL Studio NewTone | A clear pitched recording, such as a vocal phrase, in an installation with NewTone available. | Review detected notes, then send them to the Piano roll or save MIDI. Check your edition and plug-in license. |
Each method estimates notes differently. Software availability, file handling and pricing can change; check the provider’s current documentation and your edition before starting. Saturalabs does not convert audio to MIDI.
Prepare a recording for more useful results
- Start with a source you may use. If you have original project tracks or an isolated performance, use those instead of a full mixed song. Keep an untouched copy.
- Choose a short, clear passage. A single melody with distinct note attacks is easier to inspect than a dense arrangement. Trim long silences and compare the converted passage with its original timing.
- Reduce competing sounds at the source. If another instrument plays over the melody, try the original track or another take first. A separation tool can produce an estimate, but artifacts or missing notes can carry into the transcription.
- Keep a good working file. Use an available clean WAV or AIFF if your converter supports it. Converting an already compressed recording to WAV does not restore lost detail.
Ableton recommends isolated instruments and clear attacks for its conversion commands; its audio-to-MIDI manual explains why other instruments and weak attacks can confuse detection. If you only have a mixed file, Saturalabs’ stem splitter can test a requested source. Listen to the extracted audio before transcribing it: isolation is an estimate, and AI WAV downloads require an account and credits.
Convert a recording with Basic Pitch
- Open Spotify’s Basic Pitch demo and use a recording of a single instrument or voice. Its page also offers microphone recording.
- Follow the page’s instructions to analyze the audio and download the resulting MIDI file. Review the service’s current file and privacy information before submitting material.
- Import the MIDI into your DAW, assign a software instrument and play it alongside the original. Correct obvious pitch, timing and note-length errors.
- Check whether pitch-bend data is useful in your DAW and instrument; some instruments interpret or ignore it differently. Save a corrected MIDI copy.
Spotify describes Basic Pitch as free and open source and notes that it supports pitch-bend detection. A MIDI file can sound very different from the source because its sound comes from the instrument playing it, not from the recording itself.
Convert audio to MIDI in Ableton Live
- Import or record an audio clip and select it. In a supported Live edition, open the clip’s context menu or Create menu.
- Choose Convert Melody to New MIDI Track for a single-note line, Convert Harmony for pitched chords, or Convert Drums for a percussive rhythm.
- Listen to the new MIDI track against the source, then edit the notes and timing. Replace the default instrument if you want a different sound.
- If note boundaries are consistently wrong, inspect the audio clip’s transient markers before trying again. Export MIDI from the edited clip when you need it in another project or application.
Ableton distinguishes these conversion commands from Slice to New MIDI Track: slicing assigns portions of the original audio to notes rather than transcribing the musical pitches. See the Live manual and check the functions available in your edition.
Convert a vocal or melody with FL Studio NewTone
- Open NewTone if it is available in your FL Studio installation, and load the clear pitched recording you want to analyze.
- Inspect the detected note regions. Correct obvious pitch and note-boundary errors while comparing against the original.
- Use NewTone’s Send to piano roll command to send detected notes to the selected channel and pattern, or use Save as MIDI to create a MIDI file.
- Play the notes with an instrument and edit the resulting piano-roll part. Keep the original audio and project.
Image-Line documents the send and save commands in the NewTone manual. Check the plug-in’s availability and save/export rights in your edition; an audio clip and its MIDI transcription are separate assets.
Fix common MIDI conversion errors
| What you hear or see | What to try |
|---|---|
| Extra or missing notes | Compare a short passage with the original, remove spurious notes and add missing pitches. Try a cleaner isolated source. |
| Wrong octave | Compare the melody with a reference instrument and move the affected notes by octaves if appropriate. |
| Notes start too early or late | Adjust note boundaries in the piano roll; inspect attacks or transient markers before reconverting. |
| Chords become a single line | Use a method suited to polyphonic harmony, then inspect each detected note. No converter guarantees a complete chord. |
| The sound is not the original instrument | That is expected: MIDI drives a chosen instrument. Keep the audio if you need the original timbre and performance. |
Common questions
Can I convert an MP3 to MIDI?
Some converters accept MP3, but they analyze the recording rather than changing its container. A clean isolated recording is generally easier to inspect than a dense, compressed mix.
Can I turn a whole song into separate MIDI instruments?
A mixed song is difficult to transcribe accurately. Separate original tracks are best; an isolation estimate can help prepare a source, but it can also introduce artifacts. Expect to edit the resulting notes.
Does MIDI preserve the singer’s voice?
No. MIDI can represent estimated notes and certain performance data; the sound comes from the instrument that plays them. Keep the original vocal recording for its timbre, words and expression.
Does Saturalabs export MIDI?
No. Its isolation tools produce estimated audio tracks. Use a separate audio-to-MIDI tool and review the notes in a DAW.
