How to Loop a Song on Spotify: Repeat One or a Playlist

Put a song on repeat in Spotify on mobile or desktop, understand the repeat icons, and troubleshoot missing playback controls.

In this guide
The short version

Open Spotify's Now Playing controls and select Repeat until its icon shows a small 1. That repeats the current song. Repeat without the 1 loops the current album or playlist, while the inactive state turns repeat off.

To loop one song on Spotify, play the track, open the Now Playing controls and select the Repeat button until it shows a small “1.” The song should play again when it ends. To repeat an album or playlist instead, select Repeat without the 1.

Spotify describes Repeat as a control for albums, playlists and individual songs in its Now Playing guide. The available controls and their location can vary by app version, device, playback context and account.

Put a song on repeat on an iPhone or Android phone

  1. Start the song. Open Spotify and play the track you want to hear again.
  2. Open Now Playing. Tap the track bar near the bottom of the app to expand the playback screen.
  3. Find Repeat. Look for the icon with two arrows forming a loop. If a control is not visible, Spotify suggests checking the three-dot menu in Now Playing for more options.
  4. Select repeat one. From the inactive state, tap Repeat twice; look for the small 1 on the active icon. If Repeat was already on, tap until you see the 1 instead of assuming a fixed number of taps.
  5. Check the result. Let the song reach its end. If a different track starts, reopen Now Playing and check the repeat state and playback device.

To stop looping the song, tap Repeat until the icon is inactive. If you want the entire album or playlist to start over, use the active Repeat state without the small 1.

Loop a song on Spotify desktop or web player

  1. Play the song and find the playback controls at the bottom of the Spotify window.
  2. Select the Repeat icon until its active state shows a small 1. Hovering over a control may display its label.
  3. To stop repeating, select Repeat again until it is inactive. To repeat the current album or playlist, select the active state without the 1.

The same principle applies when Spotify is controlling another device: check which device is playing and whether its playback controls support the action. Spotify Connect and app interfaces can differ.

What do the repeat icons mean?

StateWhat repeatsHow to check
Repeat offPlayback follows its normal queue rather than being set to repeat. The Repeat control is inactive.
Repeat allThe current playlist or album plays again after it finishes.Repeat is active without a small 1.
Repeat oneThe current song starts again after it ends.Repeat is active and shows a small 1.

Spotify's controls may change appearance, but the small 1 distinguishes repeating the current song from repeating the larger playback selection.

Why can't I find the repeat button?

  • Expand the player. The compact track bar does not show every control. Open Now Playing and check the three-dot menu.
  • Check the playback context and device. Controls may differ for songs, podcasts, remote devices and other playback situations. Try a regular music track in the Spotify app and confirm the selected device.
  • Check your app and account. Features and restrictions can differ by plan, region and app version. Update the app and consult Spotify's current help for your account; do not assume a control is available in every free or Premium experience.
  • Confirm the state. If the icon has no 1, you may be repeating a playlist rather than the song. If it is inactive, select it until the desired state appears.

Can you loop just part of a Spotify song?

Spotify's Repeat control described above repeats the whole song, album or playlist; it does not select custom start and end points. If you have a separate audio file you have permission to use, the Saturalabs audio looper can repeat a selected interval of a supported local mono or stereo MP3 or WAV.

Enter the start and end in seconds and choose 2–100 total plays, including the first play. Input and output are each limited to five minutes and 50 MiB. Listen across the joins before downloading. The looper does not connect to Spotify, import a Spotify link or turn a streaming download into an editable file.

For musical timing and smooth joins, see what a loop is in music. Use only audio you have the necessary rights to edit or share.

Common questions

Does Repeat with a 1 play the song only once?

No. It means Spotify repeats that one song until you change the playback state or selection.

How do I repeat an entire playlist?

Play the playlist and select Repeat until it is active without the small 1. Check that the playlist, rather than a single track, is the current playback context.

Can I save a repeated Spotify track as a new audio file?

The Repeat control changes playback; it does not export a new looped audio file. A separate local-file editor needs a compatible file you have permission to use.
