How to Make a Discord Soundboard and Add Custom Sounds

Prepare a short sound, upload it to your Discord server's soundboard, and troubleshoot permissions, file limits and playback.

The short version

Prepare a short MP3, then use Discord on desktop or in a browser to add it to a server's Soundboard. You need permission to create expressions and an available slot; check the file and playback in a voice channel.

To make a Discord soundboard, prepare a short MP3, join a server voice channel on desktop or in a browser, open Soundboard and choose Add Sound. Select your file, name and preview it, then upload it to a server where you have permission. Play it in that server's voice channel to check the result.

Discord's built-in Soundboard is a collection of short sounds attached to a server, not a continuous music player. Its Soundboard guide says uploads are available on desktop or in a browser; sounds can also be played from mobile where available.

What you need before uploading

RequirementPractical check
An eligible audio fileDiscord's upload guide specifies MP3, up to 512 KB and up to five seconds. Leave some room below the limits and check the exported file.
A server and a free slotChoose the server where the sound should live. If it is full, ask an administrator to manage existing sounds or check the server's capacity.
Permission to add soundsDiscord identifies Create Expressions as the permission for adding custom sounds. An administrator can check the relevant role.
Permission to play soundsUse Soundboard controls playback and can be configured for roles and individual voice channels.

Discord's developer specification lists a 5.2-second maximum; its user-facing guide says five seconds. Aim below five seconds to allow for encoding and check Discord's upload screen for current requirements.

Prepare a soundboard clip

  1. Choose a source you can use. Make a recording or use a sound you have permission to upload. A downloaded clip or attribution alone does not establish permission.
  2. Choose the useful moment. A short reaction or effect should be understandable immediately. Keep a little room around the sound so it does not begin or end with an abrupt cut.
  3. Trim and export. In the audio trimmer, open a supported mono or stereo MP3 or WAV up to five minutes and 50 MiB. Select a region shorter than five seconds, choose MP3 under Download format, prepare the clip, preview it and download it. The tool runs locally; MP3 encoding may introduce slight padding.
  4. Check the actual file. Play the downloaded clip, check its duration and file size in your device's file information, and ensure the loudest sound is comfortable. Re-trim or adjust the level if needed.

If the source is a video, first extract a soundtrack you have permission to use, then trim it; a soundtrack export includes everything audible in the mix. The sound-effects guide has ideas for recording your own original cues.

Upload and play the sound

  1. Open Discord on desktop or in a browser. Select the target server and join a voice channel.
  2. Open Soundboard. Select its control in the voice channel and choose Add Sound. The layout can vary with Discord updates.
  3. Choose your MP3. Select the prepared file, name it and preview the clip. Use the upload screen's available controls for the clip and volume, then submit it.
  4. Test it in the intended channel. Open the server's Soundboard and select the new sound. Ask a willing listener whether the level is comfortable; adjust the sound or source if necessary.

Discord says Nitro is not required to use a server's Soundboard within that server; using Soundboard sounds across servers requires an active Nitro subscription. Upload permission, available slots and channel permissions still apply. See Discord's current guide for details.

How to add sounds to Discord Soundboard from mobile

Discord's current Soundboard support guide says uploads use desktop or browser. It separately documents playing existing server sounds in the mobile app. If the app on your phone has no Add Sound control, prepare the file on the phone and upload it using a supported desktop or browser session; Discord does not promise that every mobile browser supports the upload flow.

  1. Prepare the MP3. Save a clip you have permission to use to your phone. If necessary, use the audio trimmer with a compatible source, select a section under five seconds and download the MP3. Check its actual duration and size against Discord's current upload screen.
  2. Make the file available to the upload session. Transfer it to your computer or use a supported browser session that can access the saved file. Keep the original and confirm you have the correct server and permission to create expressions.
  3. Upload and test. In the supported session, join the intended server voice channel, open Soundboard and choose Add Sound. Select the file, name it and upload it. If the option is absent, check server permissions and available slots rather than assuming the file was uploaded.
  4. Play the added clip on mobile. In the Discord mobile app, join the server's voice channel, tap the screen to show the bottom toolbar, drag the toolbar upward and tap Soundboard. Select the available sound to play it in the channel.

Discord's guide says a listener who is deafened will not hear the sound. If a clip does not play, check the channel's Use Soundboard permission and the listener's Soundboard Volume; the upload permission and playback permission are separate.

Why can't I add or hear a sound?

ProblemWhat to check
No Add Sound optionUse desktop or browser and check Create Expressions with a server administrator. Confirm you are adding to the intended server.
The file is rejectedCheck that it is MP3, shorter than five seconds and within the stated size limit. Inspect the exported file rather than assuming the source or selection has the same duration. Try a shorter export if needed.
No available slotsAn administrator can inspect Server Settings → Soundboard and manage existing sounds. Discord's server limits vary with boost level.
Others cannot hear a soundConfirm you are in the intended voice channel and have Use Soundboard permission there. Listeners can check User Settings → Voice & Video → Soundboard → Soundboard Volume; a zero setting mutes soundboard playback for that listener.
The clip is too loud or hard to understandPreview and reduce its volume using the available upload controls or revise the source. Avoid maximizing loudness; compare against normal speech.

Common questions

Can I add a sound from my phone?

Discord's guide says Soundboard uploads are through desktop or browser. Prepare a file on your phone if you like, transfer it to an accessible device and upload using a supported desktop or browser session.

Can I remove or replace a sound?

Server administrators and members with the appropriate Manage Expressions permission can manage sounds under Server Settings → Soundboard. Check the current controls before removing a shared sound.

Can I use any sound from a video?

Only upload material you have the necessary rights and permission to use. Extracting or trimming a clip does not grant those rights; Discord also requires uploads to follow its rules.
