In this guide
Select the intended microphone in Discord, check mute and input mode, and run a mic test. Compare a separate recording and the operating-system input before changing sensitivity or processing; each test checks a different part of the path.
If your Discord mic is not working, select the intended input in Discord's Voice & Video settings, check mute and input mode, and run its Mic Test. If it is quiet or cuts out, compare the same microphone in another recording app, check the device input level, then adjust voice-activity sensitivity and processing one setting at a time.
The steps below focus on Discord desktop or browser and Windows 11. Names and availability can vary by Discord version and device. Discord's voice troubleshooting guide documents input selection, Mic Test, input mode and permissions.
Start with the symptom
| What happens? | First check | What it tells you |
|---|---|---|
| No one hears you | Check physical mute, Discord mute, input device and whether Push to Talk is active. | A muted or different input can prevent speech reaching the call. |
| Your voice is quiet | Play Discord's Mic Test and a separate recording; check the device's input level. | Find out whether the low level occurs before Discord or only in the call. |
| Words cut off | Compare a steady test phrase with Voice Activity and review sensitivity and processing. | A threshold or filter may affect quiet word endings; a network or device issue is also possible. |
| One person cannot hear you | Ask another participant and check the first listener's playback and user-volume settings. | A problem heard by only one listener may be on that listening path. |
1. Check mute, input mode and the selected microphone
- Check the microphone or headset's physical mute switch, cable or wireless connection. Confirm Discord is not muted and that you have permission to speak in the channel.
- In Discord, open User Settings → Voice & Video. On desktop, look under the Voice tab for Input Device and choose the microphone you intend to use.
- Check Input Mode. If Push to Talk is selected, use its assigned key while speaking; choose Voice Activity if that is the mode you intend to use.
- Use Discord's Mic Test → Let's Check and speak at your normal distance. Listen to the test playback and ask someone in a call to confirm the result afterward.
Discord's support guide documents these controls. A successful mic test confirms a test path, not that every channel, listener or network condition is correct.
2. Make a quiet Discord mic louder without clipping
- Check placement. Position the microphone consistently and point its intended side toward your mouth. A headset boom moved away from the mouth can sound quiet; keep it out of the path of strong breath.
- Check device input. On Windows 11, open Settings → System → Sound → Input, select the microphone and review its input volume. Microsoft's Sound Recorder instructions show the input-volume control.
- Check Discord input volume. In Voice & Video, adjust the input volume for the selected device. Test with a normal phrase and a louder phrase, then ask another participant whether the level is usable.
- Stop if it distorts. If loud words become harsh or clipped, lower the overloaded input stage and retest. Raising a later slider cannot restore a signal that clipped earlier.
Compare a recording outside Discord with Discord's test at similar listening levels. If both are quiet, inspect the microphone, connection and operating-system input first. If the recording is clear but Discord is quiet, revisit Discord's selected input and input volume. Neither comparison alone proves the exact fault.
3. Fix speech that cuts out
In Voice Activity mode, the input threshold determines when Discord treats sound as speech. If quiet words or sentence endings disappear, test the automatic sensitivity option and then a manual setting if needed. Discord's input-mode guide explains both options and suggests setting the threshold between background noise and the quietest intended speech.
- Say the same short phrase at normal and quiet speaking levels, including the final word.
- Adjust one control, repeat the phrase and listen to the test. If the threshold is too permissive, background noise may keep the mic active.
- If a noise-suppression option is enabled, compare a brief test with it on and off. Keep the setting that preserves words while reducing the distraction; names and available options can vary.
- Ask another participant to listen during an actual call. If your local test is clear but the call cuts out, compare the connection and another listener before assuming the microphone is faulty.
The Discord noise-suppression guide explains why a cleaner pause is not enough: listen to quiet syllables and word endings too.
4. Check microphone permission
On Windows 11, open Settings → Privacy & security → Microphone. Check microphone access and app access, including desktop-app access if using the desktop client. Microsoft's microphone permission guide describes the Windows controls.
If using Discord in a browser, also check that browser's permission for Discord's site and the selected input. For mobile, Discord's voice guide documents the mobile Voice settings and input-mode check; device permissions and available controls depend on the phone and app version.
Compare an independent microphone test
The Saturalabs microphone test can show input activity and play a short local recording in a compatible browser after permission is granted. Use the intended microphone, speak normally and listen to the sample. It uses the browser-selected input and does not change Discord's settings or test a Discord call.
If the browser sample and a local recording both fail, check device connection, mute and operating-system permissions. If those tests are clear but Discord is not, compare Discord's device, input mode and settings. If the issue persists, use Discord's support steps; its reset option changes voice settings, so note your current choices before using it.
Common questions
Why is my Discord mic so quiet?
Possible causes include distance, the wrong input, low device or Discord input volume, or a listener's playback settings. Compare a separate recording with Discord's Mic Test before raising levels.
Why can I hear others but they cannot hear me?
Playback and microphone input are separate paths. Check mute, Push to Talk, input device, permissions and channel speaking permission; hearing other people does not prove your mic is sending.
Why does Discord cut off the end of my sentence?
Voice-activity sensitivity or processing can affect quiet endings, but a connection or device problem is also possible. Compare the same phrase with one setting changed at a time and ask a listener to test.
Can I clean up a Discord recording later?
Keep the original and compare a targeted cleanup on a copy. A saved-file tool cannot change the live call or guarantee recovery of a word that was not recorded. See how to record Discord audio for separate-track checks.
