How to Use Serato Stems: Isolate Vocals, Drums and Music

Use Serato DJ Stems to isolate an acapella or instrumental, prepare tracks, troubleshoot controls and understand file-export limits.

In this guide
The short version

Load a track in Serato DJ and use the Acapella or Instrumental quick button to isolate a part during playback. For finer control use the available Stems pads, and prepare tracks before a performance if analysis delay is a problem. A live isolated output is not automatically a standalone audio file.

Working in BandLab? See how to use BandLab Splitter to audition and export separated parts.

Serato Stems separates a loaded track into estimated vocal, melody, bass and drum parts for DJ playback. In Serato DJ Pro, load a track to a virtual deck and choose Acapella to hear the vocal estimate or Instrumental to hear the instrumental parts. Serato's Stems instructions document these quick controls and the more detailed Stems tab.

The controls affect what you hear while the track plays. They do not retrieve the original studio tracks, and toggling a deck button does not by itself create a standalone vocal file. Features and hardware controls vary by Serato product, version and setup.

Isolate vocals or an instrumental in Serato DJ

  1. Load a track. Open Serato DJ Pro and load a track from your library to a virtual deck. Use a track you have permission to play and, if needed, edit.
  2. Choose a quick output. Click Acapella in the virtual deck to isolate the vocal estimate, or Instrumental for the instrumental output. Serato also documents these quick controls in DJ Lite.
  3. Wait for analysis if necessary. Serato notes that isolation may be delayed briefly immediately after loading a track. Listen before making a transition rather than assuming the change is instantaneous.
  4. Compare the result. Check a quiet phrase, a dense chorus and a transition. Listen for instrumental bleed in the acapella, missing vocal details, or vocal remnants in the instrumental.
  5. Restore the desired mix. Toggle the control again as needed and verify what is audible before bringing another deck into the mix.

Use the individual Stems controls

In DJ Pro, Serato says the Stems tab becomes available with supported primary hardware connected or with Serato Play in two-deck mode. Its pads provide more detailed control and stem-based effects. Device mappings and features differ; consult the guide for your controller and software version rather than assuming a pad layout.

Choose the parts according to the task. For an acapella, compare the vocal without the accompaniment. For a backing, remove or reduce vocals while checking that bass, melody and drums still provide the cues you need. Layering two separated tracks can make artifacts and timing differences more obvious, so audition the full transition.

Prepare tracks before a set

By default, Serato DJ Pro analyzes Stems when a Stems function is triggered. Serato offers two preparation options in its track-preparation guide:

  • Analyze on song load: enable Setup → DJ Preferences → On Song Load → Analyze Stems. Analysis starts when the track is loaded, but uses additional processing power.
  • Prepare in the Stems crate: drag tracks from the library into the Stems crate before performing. Serato says the gray Stems icon turns white when preparation is complete. This can help slower computers but uses storage and may take time.

Test your actual computer, library and controller before a performance. Preparation time depends on the file and machine; a prepared separation can still contain audible artifacts.

Serato DJ on iPhone and iPad

Serato DJ for iOS has its own interface. Serato says to tap the Pad Mode button and choose Stems; the top-row pads mute or restore Vocal, Melody, Bass and Drums. On iPad, Acapella and Instrumental quick buttons are also available. In the documented iOS version, the four stem pads are available in Free Mode and the effects pads require a DJ Suite subscription.

Serato states that iOS Stems are not available for tracks streamed from Apple Music or Spotify. Check the current iOS Stems guide for version, device and streaming restrictions; do not assume those exact restrictions apply to every desktop source.

Can I export the isolated vocal?

A DJ deck's Acapella button changes live output; it is not itself an export command. Check your Serato product, license, recording options and source restrictions before planning a standalone file. Serato Studio is a separate product: its export guide describes exporting individual project decks, which is not the same as saying DJ Pro's quick button saves each separated stem.

If you need a vocal file for an edit, use an authorized original vocal track where possible. Alternatively, the Saturalabs acapella extractor accepts a supported local MP3, WAV, MP4 or MOV up to 50 MiB. Describe the singing and review Isolated sound; Background audio is the remainder. WAV downloads require an account and sufficient credits. Compare the result with the source before importing it into a project.

Fix common Stems problems

  • No individual Stems tab: check your product, version, hardware connection and Serato Play setup. Quick deck controls and detailed pads have different availability.
  • A delay after loading: let analysis finish or prepare the track in the Stems crate before the set. Check available computer resources and storage.
  • Streaming track unavailable on iOS: Serato documents Apple Music and Spotify restrictions for the iOS app. Use a compatible source you are authorized to use.
  • Music remains in the vocal: separation is an estimate. Compare a cleaner original stem or a different passage; EQ alone cannot isolate a singer from overlapping instruments.

Common questions

Does Serato DJ Lite have Stems?

Serato documents Acapella and Instrumental quick controls and track preparation in DJ Lite. Check its current support guide for hardware and version details.

Are separated Stems the original recording tracks?

No. They are estimates made from the mixed recording. Original production stems may preserve details that separation changes or misses; see stems vs audio isolation.

How is this different from rekordbox?

Both offer performance-oriented stem controls, but their interfaces and preparation workflows differ. See how to isolate vocals in rekordbox.
