How to Record Audio on a Chromebook

Record voice or Chromebook audio with Recorder on supported devices, or make a short microphone recording in your browser.

In this guide
The short version

On a supported Chromebook Plus, use Recorder and select the microphone or Chromebook audio. For a short microphone take, use a compatible browser recorder. Make a test, listen to the saved file and check its format before editing.

To record audio on a Chromebook, open Recorder from the Launcher if it is available, choose the intended audio source and select Start recording. Stop, listen back and export the file. Google lists a Chromebook Plus device as a requirement for its Recorder app.

For a short microphone recording on a compatible Chromebook browser, the voice recorder is another option. It records the selected microphone locally, not the Chromebook's internal or tab audio. A screen recording is a separate video workflow.

Record with Chromebook Recorder

  1. Open the app. Select Launcher and open Recorder. Google lists a Chromebook Plus as a requirement in its Recorder documentation; check your device and account if it is unavailable.
  2. Choose the source. Select the microphone control to choose the built-in or a connected microphone. Google also documents a Chromebook audio option for system audio. Select the source needed for the recording and test it.
  3. Make a short take. Select Start recording, speak or play the intended sound, then select Stop. Play the recording and check volume, quiet words and background noise.
  4. Export a copy. Open the recording, select More → Export and choose a location. Google says recordings are stored internally and describes Export for saving a copy elsewhere. Check the exported file before editing or sharing.

For interviews or meetings, inform participants and obtain the permissions needed for your situation. Check the available sources in your version rather than assuming a microphone selection captures every app or participant.

Record a short voice note in the browser

  1. Open the Saturalabs voice recorder in a compatible browser. Choose Start recording and allow microphone access when prompted.
  2. Speak at a consistent distance and stop manually when finished. The recorder is set to stop after about two minutes, but background browser scheduling can delay the stop.
  3. Play the original and download it before starting another take or leaving the page. Optionally prepare WAV or MP3 and preview that actual file; conversion depends on browser decoding support.

The original browser recording uses a supported codec and container, commonly WebM or M4A; its actual format is shown on download. Optional WAV is 48 kHz 16-bit PCM and MP3 is newly encoded. Each recording and output must fit 50 MiB. The tool records only the microphone selected by the browser or operating system, not Chromebook system audio, and does not automatically remove noise or transcribe.

Fix a silent or noisy recording

  • No microphone sound: Check the selected input and physical microphone switch. In Chromebook Settings → Privacy and security → Privacy controls, check microphone access. Google's privacy controls guide explains device and app access.
  • No app sound: Choose a recorder that supports Chromebook audio and confirm that source is enabled. The browser voice recorder captures a microphone, not system playback.
  • Voice too quiet or distorted: Move closer or adjust input settings, make a new test and listen to a louder phrase. Increasing playback volume cannot repair clipping already recorded.
  • Background sound remains: Reduce the noise at the source when possible. The voice isolator can test a supported file when a competing sound overlaps speech; it can alter words or leave bleed, and AI downloads require an account and credits.

Need video as well?

Use Chromebook Screen Capture to record the screen and select microphone, device audio or both. The Chromebook screen recording guide covers the steps and explains why WebM recordings need a compatible editor or conversion before using Saturalabs' MP4/MOV video-to-audio converter.

Common questions

Can I record my voice without installing an app?

In a compatible browser, you can use the local voice recorder after granting microphone access. Download the take before leaving the page.

Can the browser voice recorder capture a Chrome tab?

No. It records the selected microphone. Google documents a Chromebook audio source in Recorder on supported devices; verify the saved result.

Where are Recorder files saved?

Google says Recorder saves recordings in internal storage. Use its Export option to choose a file location for a copy.
