How to record your voice online

Use a quiet space and make a short test before the take you need.

  1. 01 / ALLOW

    Start your microphone

Choose Start recording and allow microphone access when prompted. Your browser or operating system selects the input device. A take is set to stop after about two minutes; background browser scheduling can delay the stop.

  2. 02 / RECORD

    Speak and stop

Speak at a consistent distance, then choose Stop recording rather than relying on a background timer. Playback is not live through your speakers. The take stays in this browser.

  3. 03 / SAVE

    Preview and download

Listen to the original and download it. Optionally prepare WAV or MP3 and preview that actual export. Save before starting another take or leaving the page.

Know your recording

Which file does the voice recorder create?

The browser captures audio using a supported recording codec and container, commonly WebM or M4A. The original download shows its actual browser-reported format. This is not a lossless master by default, and the device or browser may apply input processing.

The optional conversion decodes that recording locally at 48 kHz. WAV is 16-bit PCM; MP3 is a new lossy encode at 192 kbps and may add delay or padding. A browser may be able to record a format it cannot decode for conversion: if that happens, download the original and use a compatible editor. Each recording and output must fit 50 MiB.

Recording uses only the selected microphone, not system or tab audio. The tool does not automatically remove noise, balance speakers or transcribe speech. The microphone test can help check the input, and the gain guide explains how to reduce the risk of a quiet or distorted take.

Prepare a useful take

What to check before recording again

Listen for complete words, background sounds and distortion at a comfortable playback level. If the input sounds rough, inspect microphone placement and input gain before raising the output volume. Keep the original recording when preparing another format.

For a video, follow the voiceover placement and mixing guide or the Canva audio guide. For a slide presentation, see how to add audio to Google Slides or record and insert a PowerPoint voiceover. For a short downloaded WAV or MP3, the separate audio trimmer can keep a selected passage. For competing sound that overlaps speech, voice isolation is a separate AI service; it uploads audio for processing and requires an account and sufficient credits for downloads. Neither conversion nor isolation guarantees repair of damaged speech.

MP3 encoder credits

Built with the LAME encoder via lamejs.

The MP3 download uses lamejs 1.2.1 by Alex Zhukov, a JavaScript port of the LAME MP3 encoder. Its unmodified script is served separately. See the attribution and source notes, upstream license notice, LGPL-3.0 and GPL-3.0 texts, and complete upstream source package.

A few useful answers

Free online voice recorder questions

How do I record audio online?

Choose Start recording, allow microphone access and speak. Stop the recording or wait for the approximately two-minute automatic stop, which may be delayed if the browser throttles a background tab. Preview and download the original browser recording, or prepare a WAV or MP3 if your browser supports conversion.

Is the recording uploaded?

No. Recording, preview and conversion happen locally in your browser. Download your take before leaving or starting a new recording; it is not saved for later.

Can I download an MP3 or WAV?

Often, yes. The browser first captures its own supported format, such as WebM or M4A. You can download that original or try local conversion to 48 kHz PCM16 WAV or 192 kbps MP3. If the browser cannot decode its recording, the original remains available.

How long can I record?

Each take is set to stop after about two minutes. A background browser may delay that stop; stop it manually when finished. The recording and each output must fit 50 MiB. This tool is for short takes, not a full podcast episode or a multitrack session.

Does it record system audio or remove noise?

No. It records the microphone input selected by the browser or operating system. It does not capture a tab or system audio, remove noise, or guarantee a lossless recording. Device processing and browser support vary.
