Upload a permitted audio file in Canva, add it to the video timeline and place it at the intended cue. Preview the full mix and actual export. Canva's direct voiceover recording is a separate option whose availability depends on the design and account.
To add audio to a Canva video, upload the audio file to your design, add it to the video timeline and position it where you want it to start. Play the result with the existing video sound, adjust the balance and listen to the actual export before sharing.
You can upload an existing recording or use Canva's voiceover feature in supported video timelines. A separate recording is useful when you want to review a take first; the editor's recording option can let you speak while the design plays.
How to upload audio to a Canva video
- Prepare a permitted audio file. Listen to the recording outside Canva and keep the original. Canva's current upload requirements list common audio formats including MP3, WAV, M4A and WEBM, with a file-size limit. Check the current requirements for your account before uploading.
- Open the video design. In the editor, select Uploads → Upload files and choose the audio from your device. Canva's upload guide documents this desktop flow; mobile controls can differ.
- Add the upload to the timeline. Once the file is available, use the timeline's Add Audio control and select your uploaded file. Canva's video editor guide describes audio appearing in its own track section.
- Position and balance it. Place the clip at the intended cue, then play through the beginning and end. Lower competing music or original sound where needed; retain any dialogue or effects the story requires.
- Review the export. Export a working copy and listen to the actual file, not only the editor preview. Check the first word, transitions, ending and any moments where narration overlaps other sound.
Record a voiceover for Canva
For a short narration, the free Saturalabs voice recorder captures microphone audio locally and offers the original browser recording plus WAV or MP3 conversion where supported. Listen and download the take before leaving or starting another. The tool is designed for takes of about two minutes; stop manually when finished because a background browser can delay the automatic stop. Upload the saved file to Canva afterward.
Canva also documents a direct voiceover option in its supported video timeline: open Audio, choose Voiceovers and select Record voiceover. Its voiceover help page explains alternative paths and says some design or page types do not support audio or duration. Availability and menu labels can vary; check the current controls in your design.
Recording directly in Canva and uploading a separate file have different privacy and editing flows. Saturalabs' local recorder does not upload the take, but uploading it to Canva is a separate action. Record in a quiet space and make a short test before the full narration.
Keep the narration clear in the mix
| Problem | What to check |
|---|---|
| Music masks the first words | Lower or move the music on its own track and preview the sentence in context. The audio ducking guide explains why separate tracks give more control. |
| The voice starts late | Check silence before the first word as well as the audio clip's timeline position. Align the word to the visual cue and replay the transition. |
| The voice sounds doubled | Look for both the uploaded narration and a duplicate or original voice already playing. Temporarily mute one copy to identify the source. |
| The original take is noisy | Try a quieter retake before processing. If a competing sound overlaps speech, compare cleanup methods; stronger processing can change words. |
For an existing mixed recording, the voice isolator can estimate a requested voice, but it can leave noise or alter speech. It is a separate AI service: audio is uploaded for processing and downloads require an account and sufficient credits. It does not automatically place the result in Canva.
Why won't Canva accept or play my audio?
Check the actual file type and size against Canva's current requirements; changing a filename extension does not convert the data. Confirm the upload has finished, then check whether the audio is on the intended timeline and within the video duration. Test playback at a comfortable device volume and verify the exported file. For a compatible short file, the audio converter can prepare selected MP3/WAV/M4A pairs locally.
Common questions
Can I add my own voiceover to a Canva video?
Yes. Upload a supported recording and add it to the timeline, or use Canva's direct voiceover feature when available for the design. Review the actual timing and mix.
Does Canva accept MP3 and WAV?
Its current upload requirements list MP3 and WAV among supported audio formats. Check the linked Canva page for current size, format and account limits.
Can I add audio to a Canva presentation too?
Audio availability depends on the design type and its controls. Check your presentation's editor and playback options. A recorded presentation video and an audio clip on a design are different outputs; test the one you intend to share.
