Convert AIFF to MP3

Free · local

Choose a supported AIFF and prepare an audio file. No audio upload or account required.

This tool accepts uncompressed mono or stereo PCM AIFF with 8, 16, 24 or 32 bits. AIFF-C and compressed or blocked variants are not supported. Browser playback of the original may not work even when conversion works. Output is resampled and MP3 is lossy; WAV is 16-bit PCM and may not preserve source samples. This tool does not separate voices or music, copy tags/artwork, preserve higher bit depth or source codec padding, remove noise, or isolate sound. Input and output must each fit 50 MiB and five minutes; an oversized output is rejected rather than cut. MP3 is a new lossy encode and may add delay or padding. Encoder credits and source are below.

How to convert AIFF to MP3

  1. 01 / OPEN

    Choose an AIFF file

Select an uncompressed PCM .aif or .aiff file no larger than 50 MiB and five minutes. Mono or stereo, 8-, 16-, 24- or 32-bit PCM at 8–192 kHz is supported. AIFF-C is not supported.

  2. 02 / CONVERT

    Choose a bitrate

MP3 is selected by default. Choose 128, 192 or 320 kbps and convert. The output must also fit 50 MiB.

  3. 03 / LISTEN

    Preview and download

Listen to the actual MP3 and check its length before downloading. Keep the original AIFF file.

What happens when you convert AIFF to MP3?

Uncompressed AIFF contains PCM audio; MP3 is lossy and can discard detail to make a smaller file. This converter reads supported PCM AIFF locally, resamples it to 48 kHz and makes a new MP3. Compare quiet passages, dense music and the ending with the original. Higher bitrates generally use more space but cannot restore detail absent from the source.

MP3 encoding can add delay or padding, so check alignment if the result will return to a video or multitrack project. Tags and artwork are not copied. Keep the original for future edits.

Select WAV to create a 16-bit PCM working copy at 44.1 or 48 kHz. This is not a guaranteed sample-preserving conversion: resampling and reducing higher bit depth can change samples. WAV must fit the 50 MiB output limit. For supported PCM sources, use the separate sample-preserving AIFF to WAV converter when you need the original rate and bit depth. See the MP3 and WAV guide for the tradeoffs.

Check the AIFF format and limits

This tool accepts uncompressed PCM AIFF, not AIFF-C, compressed or blocked variants. Input must fit 50 MiB and five minutes; the output must also fit 50 MiB. The browser may be unable to play the original AIFF preview even when this converter can read it. For unsupported files or longer recordings, use a desktop converter and verify the result.

For a compatible FLAC use FLAC to MP3. To test separating a voice from a mixed recording, prepare a supported file and use the separate voice isolator; AI downloads require an account and credits.

Built with the LAME encoder via lamejs.

The optional MP3 download uses lamejs 1.2.1 by Alex Zhukov, a JavaScript port of the LAME MP3 encoder. Its unmodified script is served separately. See the attribution and source notes, upstream license notice, LGPL-3.0 and GPL-3.0 texts, and complete upstream source package.

A few useful answers

Free AIFF to MP3 converter questions

How do I convert AIFF to MP3?

Choose a supported uncompressed PCM .aif or .aiff up to 50 MiB and five minutes, select an MP3 bitrate, then convert, preview and download. Mono or stereo 8-, 16-, 24- or 32-bit PCM at 8–192 kHz is supported; the output must also fit 50 MiB.

Does this upload my audio?

No. The browser reads and converts the selected file locally. Download the result before leaving the page.

Does MP3 preserve the AIFF exactly?

No. The source is resampled and MP3 is a new lossy encode that can discard detail and add delay or padding. Keep the original AIFF.

Can I convert AIFF to WAV instead?

Yes. Select WAV to create 16-bit PCM at 44.1 or 48 kHz. Resampling or reducing higher bit depth can change samples, so this is not guaranteed lossless conversion. The same limits apply.

Why can't my AIFF file be converted?

This tool supports uncompressed PCM AIFF with the listed sample widths, rates and channel limits. AIFF-C, compressed or blocked variants, malformed files and files beyond the size or duration limits are rejected. Try a desktop converter.
