If the host’s account and your meeting role allow recording, open Meeting tools → Recording, start the recording and confirm. Stop it when finished, then check the meeting organizer’s Google Drive or the recording link after processing.
To record a Google Meet call, join on a supported device, open Meeting tools → Recording and select Start recording. Confirm the prompt, wait for recording to begin and let everyone know how the file will be used. When finished, stop the recording from the same menu and wait for the processed file.
Google requires an eligible host account and appropriate meeting permissions. Availability depends on the Workspace edition or qualifying subscription, administrator settings, device and meeting role. Check Google’s recording requirements before relying on the feature.
Who can record a Google Meet?
Google says the host must have permission to record; a participant cannot record if the host does not have it, even if the participant otherwise has access. Depending on host controls, organization and role, eligible hosts, co-hosts or certain participants may start recording. An administrator may also need to enable the feature.
If the Recording option is missing, ask the host or administrator to check the meeting’s eligibility and controls. Joining a meeting does not itself grant permission. Google lists eligible Workspace editions and qualifying subscriptions in its current help page; plans and eligibility can change.
Record a Google Meet on a computer
- Join the meeting. Check your microphone and headphones. Explain the recording and intended use, and obtain the agreement required for your situation.
- Open recording controls. Select Meeting tools → Recording at the bottom right of the meeting window. Choose a caption language if you want to record captions and the option is available.
- Start and confirm. Select Start recording, then confirm Start in the prompt. Wait for recording to begin. Google says participants are notified when it starts and stops.
- Stop when finished. Return to Meeting tools → Recording → Stop recording and confirm. Google says recording also stops when everyone leaves and has a maximum total duration of eight hours.
- Check the saved file. After processing, open the recording and listen to the beginning, a later exchange and the end. Verify that the voices and presentation you needed were captured.
Google says the recording includes the active speaker and presented content; pinned participants do not necessarily determine who appears in the file. Other windows and notifications are not saved by the built-in Meet recording. Test a short meeting first if an important presentation depends on the result.
Can you record Google Meet on a phone?
Google’s current Android instructions say eligible users can open the Meet app, join the meeting and choose More → Tools → Record, then tap Start and confirm. Stop under Tools → Record. The same host, account and permission requirements apply.
Google’s recording help currently specifies a computer or Android device for starting a recording. If you join on an iPhone or iPad, ask an eligible host to use a supported device and share the recording if appropriate; do not assume the mobile app gives every participant a record control. Features and menus may change.
Where do Google Meet recordings go?
Google says recordings are saved in the meeting organizer’s Google Drive under Google Meet, with a subfolder for each meeting. The organizer and person who started the recording receive an email link, and a link is added to the Calendar event. Processing can take time; captions may become available later than the video.
Access depends on sharing permissions. Ask the organizer for access if you cannot open or download the recording. Check whose Drive owns the file and available storage before an important meeting. Google’s help also notes that older Meet Recordings folders are being moved into a Legacy Meet Recordings folder within Google Meet; existing links should continue to work.
Recordings, captions and transcripts
A video recording, saved captions and a transcript are different meeting outputs. The recording setup may offer captions or transcription depending on your account and settings. See Google’s transcript guide for current availability and storage details. Review names, figures and technical terms against the actual audio; automated text can contain mistakes.
An administrator may require explicit participant consent for recording or transcription features. Follow the on-screen prompts and your organization’s policies. A recording notification does not replace any agreement required for the intended use.
Prepare meeting audio for editing
- With the owner’s permission, download an available copy and retain the original. Review access and confidentiality before sharing or uploading any meeting file.
- Play several sections to identify missing words, echo, quiet speakers or intrusive noise. A Meet recording may contain a mixed conversation rather than a separate file for every speaker.
- For a supported short MP4 or MOV up to 50 MiB and five minutes, the video-to-audio converter can prepare WAV or MP3 locally when your browser supports its codecs. It accepts a local file, not a Drive or Meet link, and does not separate speakers.
- Use an editor suitable for the full duration of a longer recording. The conversation editing guide covers organizing files, cuts, levels and export checks.
If a distinct competing sound overlaps a speaker, the separate voice isolator can estimate a voice in a supported file. Compare difficult words with the original; processing can change speech or leave noise. AI downloads require an account and credits.
Why can’t I record or find the file?
| Problem | What to check |
|---|---|
| Recording option is missing | Check host eligibility, your role, administrator settings and supported device. Ask the host to check its meeting controls. |
| Recording is not ready | Allow processing time, check the organizer’s email or Drive and the Calendar event, and confirm recording was started and stopped. |
| You cannot open or download it | Ask the organizer about sharing and download permissions; do not assume the meeting invitation grants file access. |
| A speaker is missing or quiet | Listen to the original recording and check the participant’s microphone and meeting audio before the next session. |
Common questions
Can a participant record a Google Meet?
Sometimes. Google requires the host to have recording permission and applies additional role, organization and host-control rules. Ask the host if the option is unavailable.
Does Google Meet notify people when recording starts?
Yes. Google says participants receive a notification when recording starts or stops. Obtain any additional agreement needed before recording or using the file.
Can I record a Google Meet for free?
Google limits built-in recording to eligible Workspace editions or qualifying subscriptions and enabled accounts. Check the host’s current plan and settings rather than assuming the feature is included in every account.
Can I get audio only?
Google describes a video meeting recording. If you have permission and an accessible saved file, export its audio in a suitable editor or use a compatible short-file converter. Check the actual output before sharing.
