Choose and test your microphone, record a short sample in Windows Sound Recorder or a compatible browser, then listen to and save the result. A microphone recording is different from capturing audio playing inside the computer.
To record your voice on a Windows PC, connect or select a microphone, open Sound Recorder, select Start recording and speak. Stop and play the saved take to check your volume and background noise. On Windows 11, Microsoft documents Sound Recorder in the Start menu; its controls can vary by version.
A short microphone recording is also possible in a compatible browser. If you want sound playing inside the computer rather than your voice, choose a system-audio or loopback workflow instead.
Record with Windows Sound Recorder
- Choose the microphone. Open Settings → System → Sound and look under Input. Select the microphone you intend to use and speak to check its input. Microsoft's microphone setup guide describes the controls for Windows 10 and 11.
- Open the recorder. On Windows 11, search Start for Sound Recorder. Allow microphone access when prompted.
- Record a test. Select Start recording or press Ctrl–R, speak a normal sentence and include a louder phrase. Select Stop or press Esc. The take appears in the recording list.
- Listen and save. Play the take at a comfortable volume. Rename it if useful and use the available share or file options to preserve a copy. Microsoft's Sound Recorder FAQ describes these controls and notes that recordings stored in the app are deleted if it is uninstalled.
Microsoft lists a limit of up to three hours per recording file for its Windows 11 Sound Recorder. Confirm the recording works and that there is enough storage before a long session. Keep the original take before editing or converting it.
Record a short voice note in the browser
- Open the Saturalabs voice recorder in a compatible browser and choose Start recording. Allow microphone access when asked.
- Speak at a consistent distance and stop manually. The recorder is set to stop after about two minutes, though background browser scheduling can delay the stop.
- Preview and download the original recording before leaving or starting another take. If supported by your browser, prepare a WAV or MP3 and listen to the actual export too.
The browser selects a supported recording codec and container; its actual original format is shown on download. Optional WAV is 48 kHz 16-bit PCM and MP3 is newly encoded. Each recording and output must fit 50 MiB. The browser tool records the selected microphone locally, not computer or tab audio.
Fix a silent, quiet or distorted recording
- No voice: Confirm the microphone is connected, unmuted and selected under Windows Sound → Input. Check Settings → Privacy & security → Microphone and the recording app's access. Microsoft explains microphone permissions for apps and browsers.
- Wrong microphone: Test near the intended device, change input if needed, and make another short recording. A moving meter shows input activity but does not prove it is the correct microphone or that speech is clear.
- Too quiet: Move closer or adjust input volume, then record again. Raising playback volume changes what you hear; it does not improve the source recording.
- Distorted: Lower the input or move farther away and test a loud phrase. Lowering a clipped recording later does not restore its lost peaks.
The microphone test offers a browser meter and temporary sample. It checks browser input but does not change Sound Recorder's settings. The microphone gain guide explains input level and clipping.
Voice, computer audio and screen recording
A microphone captures sound in the room. To record audio playing on the PC directly, see how to record computer audio, including the Windows loopback workflow. To include the screen, use the Windows screen-recording guide. Make a short test of each source; selecting a microphone does not automatically capture a clean app-audio feed.
If a finished take has a distinct competing sound, the voice isolator can test a supported file. Compare quiet words with the original: separation can leave bleed or alter speech. AI downloads require an account and credits.
Common questions
Can I record voice without installing a new app?
Use Sound Recorder if it is available on your PC, or a compatible browser recorder. Allow the microphone and play a test before the full take.
Where is my Sound Recorder take?
Microsoft says Windows 11 recordings appear inside Sound Recorder. Preserve a copy using the app's available share or file options before uninstalling it.
Does the browser recorder capture system audio?
No. It records the selected microphone. Use a supported loopback or system-audio method for sound playing inside the computer.
