What Is a WebM File? Format, Playback and Audio Explained

Learn what a WebM file contains, how to play it, and how to extract or convert its audio to MP3 or WAV.

In this guide
The short version

WebM is a media container that can hold video and audio or audio alone. Playback depends on the codecs and the player. Converting its soundtrack to MP3 or WAV creates a separate audio file, not a video.

A WebM file is a media file in the WebM container, commonly used for video and audio on the web. It may contain video with audio, video without audio, or audio alone. The container organizes the streams; the codecs inside describe how the video and sound are encoded.

A WebM file can use video codecs such as VP8, VP9 or AV1 and audio codecs such as Opus or Vorbis. The exact combination matters: a player must understand the container and be able to decode its streams. MDN's media container guide lists supported WebM codecs; the WebM Project describes the format's container and codec components.

WebM, MP4 and MP3: what is the difference?

FormatWhat it usually containsWhat to check
WebMA container for video and/or audio streams. The actual video and audio codecs, track selection and player support.
MP4Another container that can hold video, audio and other tracks. Its codecs and the destination's requirements. An MP4 extension alone does not identify every codec inside.
MP3Commonly an audio file using lossy MP3 encoding. There is no video picture in an audio-only MP3 export; another lossy encode may change sound.

Changing .webm to .mp4 or .mp3 in the filename does not convert the media. If a recipient needs a specific file type, use a suitable editor or converter and test the resulting file. For the audio format, see what an MP3 file is.

For more on the other common container, see what an MP4 file is.

How to open a WebM file

  1. Try opening the local file in a browser or media player that supports its WebM container and codecs. Play the beginning, a middle section and the end.
  2. If the picture plays without sound, check whether the file has an audio track, whether the correct track is selected, and whether playback is muted. A WebM file may have no audio.
  3. If the file does not open, confirm the download finished and try another compatible player. A media inspector can show the codecs and number of tracks. Browser and device support vary.
  4. If the destination still cannot accept the source, export an appropriate compatible format with a media editor. Keep the original and verify the finished export.

Does a WebM file always contain video?

No. WebM can carry audio without video. Some browser recording workflows create WebM audio files; the actual format depends on the device and browser. A video WebM may also lack an audio track, so the extension alone cannot tell you whether conversion to an audio file will produce sound. MDN's codec examples distinguish audio-only WebM from video WebM.

How to convert WebM audio to MP3 or WAV

  1. Open WebM to MP3 and choose a local WebM containing audio, up to five minutes and 50 MiB. The browser must support the file's audio codec, and the decoded audio must be mono or stereo.
  2. Choose MP3 at 128, 192 or 320 kbps, or select 16-bit PCM WAV at 44.1 or 48 kHz. The output must also fit within 50 MiB.
  3. Prepare the result, preview the actual output and download it. Check its duration and listen to quiet sections and the ending; retain the original WebM.

The converter creates audio only. It uses the audio stream selected by the browser and does not let you choose between multiple streams, retain the video or separate a voice from music. MP3 output is a new lossy encode; WAV avoids that additional MP3 encode but cannot restore information lost in the source. Browser decoding, resampling and encoding can change samples or timing, and metadata is not copied.

For longer files, unsupported codecs or explicit stream selection, the WebM-to-MP3 guide describes VLC and FFmpeg workflows. If you want WAV specifically, use WebM to WAV with its stated limits.

WebM playback troubleshooting

ProblemUseful first check
No soundConfirm the source contains an audio track, the selected track is correct and the player is not muted.
Black or missing pictureCheck that it is not audio-only and that the player supports the video codec.
File will not openCheck the complete download and try a compatible player or inspect its container and codecs.
Audio will not convert locallyCheck codec support, duration, file size and whether the decoded audio has more than two channels.
Wrong language or commentaryInspect available audio streams and use an editor that allows explicit stream selection.

Common questions

Is WebM a video codec?

WebM is a media container. VP8, VP9 and AV1 are examples of video codecs that may be used with it; Opus and Vorbis are audio codecs.

Is WebM the same as MP4?

No. Both are media containers, but their supported codec combinations and playback compatibility can differ. Inspect and test the actual file.

Can I convert WebM to MP3 without losing video?

An MP3 audio export does not retain the video. Keep the original WebM, or use a video editor to make a separate compatible video file.

Will converting WebM to WAV improve the sound?

PCM WAV can be useful as an editing copy, but it cannot recover information already discarded by a lossy source. Resampling or changing bit depth can also alter samples.
