Rain and thunder field recording

Approximately 18.9 seconds, mono, 44.1 kHz. Rain is part of the recording; this is not an isolated thunderclap.

Creator and reuse

Where this recording comes from

Wikimedia Commons identifies the creator as user Caesar, who recorded the rain and thunder in Sundbyberg, Sweden, on August 27, 2006. The creator released the recording into the public domain; see the original file page for the creator's statement and provenance.

The OGG download is the original file as obtained from Commons. The WAV is a 16-bit PCM conversion made for convenient editing; it does not restore information lost in the original OGG encoding. This public-domain statement applies to this recording, not to every sound or other material on Saturalabs. The file notice includes format details and checksums.

Use in a project

Place rain and thunder in an edit

  1. Preview the whole recording at a comfortable level. Choose a section whose thunder and rain fit the scene; the sound is not a single isolated strike.
  2. Import the WAV or supported OGG into your editor. Align the audible thunder with the desired visual moment, and lower its level against dialogue and music.
  3. Keep enough natural tail at cuts and listen for abrupt transitions. If you repeat the recording, check the loop boundary and add suitable fades instead of assuming the ends match.
  4. Play the exported video or game build and review the cue on another playback device. Preserve the original download so you can revise the edit.

To trim a shorter cue, open the WAV in the free audio trimmer and preview the selected range. Its file and duration limits apply; files are not transferred automatically between pages.

Need a different weather sound?

Compare another field recording on the rain sound-effects page. For a longer or rain-free thunder sound, check the individual recording's description and reuse terms in a library such as TRP's distant thunder on Freesound, which is marked CC0 on its source page. Other recordings can have different licenses and download requirements.

If you have permission to use a recording and need to try separating an audible sound, the sound effect extractor estimates a described source. Rain may remain with thunder or the thunder tail may change; AI WAV downloads require an account and sufficient credits. For other ready-to-use cues, preview footsteps, whoosh effects or chime effects.

Common questions

Is this an isolated thunder sound?

No. Rain is included in the same recording. Preview it first, or choose a different source if your project requires dry thunder.

Can I use this recording commercially?

The creator's Commons file page states that the recording was released into the public domain. Check the source page and the rights of any other material in your project; the statement applies to this recording only.

Is the WAV higher quality than the original?

No. It is a PCM conversion of the lossy OGG source for editing compatibility; converting it cannot restore detail absent from the source.
